H/T to Federal Baseball (and King indirectly) for pointing out the latest addition to the Nats 40-man roste, CA Erick San Pedro. San Pedro was a 2004 2nd round draft pick out of the University of Miami. The 23-year old did not need to be added to 40-man until the end of this season. He was 21 when drafted so it would be the end of his third season before he could be exposed to the Rule 5 Draft.
San Pedro is still considered the best defensive catching prospect in the Nats minor leagues but did not rate high enough to make Baseball America’s Top 30 prospects. Part of the problem is he is iinjury-prone. He suffered a torn left ligament in his thumb after being drafted in 2004 which delayed his start in 2005. That was compounded by a broken leg he suffered after a collision at home plate against Salem in June 2005. A return to Potomac in 2005 is his likely start in 2006.

Torn thumb ligament? Broken leg?
Sounds like a junior Church! ;-)

Wow - is this another example of a really stupid move? He doesn’t have to be added to the roster. The only reason to add him to the roster now would be if he was going to play on the major leage club - even if he played at AAA (and he was at A last season) he wouldn’t need to be on the roster.
So we have 60 odd players invited to spring training, we just lost a possible number 5 starter to the Yankees on waivers because we needed to free up a space on the 40-man - and now we add someone who won’t make our ML roster, and doesn’t need to be protected?
Someone’s been at the glue again……
