Player/Pitcher of the Week

Minor League Baseball announced their Players/Pitchers of the week.  Honored were two Nationals prospects:

In Harrisburg

The Eastern League announced today that Senators’ third baseman, Kory Casto has been named the League’s Player of the Week for the week ending June 18th. The 24-year old had an outstanding week for the Senators, hitting .500 (11-for-22) with two doubles, four home runs, nine RBI, nine runs scored, seven walks, one stolen base and a 1.136 slugging percentage in six games.  Casto, a native of Auorora, Oregon, had at least one hit in each game he played in last week, including a 3-for-5 performance with a double and two homers in an 11-9 win over Altoona on Monday. The 6’1”, 190 lb. slugger currently leads the league in RBI (49) and is ranked second in on-base percentage (.420) and runs scored (43).  Kory, who was ranked by Baseball America as the fifth best prospect in the Nationals organization entering the season, was selected by the Montreal Expos in the third round of the June 2003 draft out of the University of Portland.

In Potomac

The Carolina League announced today that Potomac starting pitcher Mike Hinckley was named the league’s pitcher of the week for the week ending June 18. Hinckley earned the award by throwing 8 2/3 innings last Friday in Potomac’s 1-0 win over Frederick.  Hinckley did not get the win as he left with the score tied at zero. The Keys were held off the board all night by Stellar pitching as Hinckley issued one walk and allowed two hits in the contest, one of those a leadoff double to Jarod Rine.  The next hit came in the form of a leadoff single in the third to Travis Brown.  The Oklahoma City, Okla. native then sat down the next 20 batters before being lifted for reliever Alex Morales.  The Nationals won the game on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth. The 8 2/3 is the longest outing of the season by any P-Nats pitcher and the award is the first to be bestowed upon any Potomac player this year.   The left-handed pitcher lowered his ERA to 3.98 in his third straight start allowing two or fewer runs and has a 4-3 record with 36 strikeouts in 14 starts.  He was originally selected in the third round of the 2001 draft and is one of baseball’s top pitching prospects.

Interview with Washington Nationals Assistant Director of Scouting, Brian Parker

1. Did the draft unfold as you expected? Was there anything surprising that happened?

We are very excited at how the draft unfolded. Jim Bowden and Dana Brown put together a plan for this draft and we tried to take advantage of it. This was an exciting draft because we were able to start thinking long-term as well as take advantage of having extra picks for the first time in recent years.

2. Dana mentioned at the press conference how different it felt to be able to draft the best available players for the first time. Was it the same perspective for you? Can you describe the feeling?

Obviously Dana put a particular focus on high school players early in this draft. This draft in particular was setup to support taking HS players. It was a down year overall for college players, especially position players. The nice thing was that we are now setting up this organization and moving forward with a plan to succeed in both the present and future. We have some young guys just now in the big leagues such as Zimmerman, Cordero, Bray, Hill, O’Conner, etc and now we’ve got another wave of players who just are coming into the organization. The one thing people need to remember is that it takes time to properly develop players, especially when you are selecting HS players. Patience is something that will be needed for all of these new draft picks.

3. Can you give a generic description of what the next steps are in working with the draft selections? No specifics to anyone drafted this year, more a top level process?

Immediately following the draft the first step is to tender each player with an official contract. We also begin signing players immediately. We’ve already got 18 players signed and ready to report to rookie ball. The GCL players reported yesterday and the Vermont players are reporting today. The goal is to get players signed as close to opening day as possible in order to get a full set of ABs and IPs for the players. The first year of development is very important for players, especially the younger ones.

4. How many players have now signed?

We’ve signed 18 players as of today. We’ve got our 5th and 6th round picks signed and they are reporting to Vermont today. Cory Van Allen is a left-handed starter with three pitches and pitchability. You cannot have enough left-handed pitchers, especially those that can start for you. Zechry Zinicola is a power arm guy who has been used as both a starter and reliever in college. This is a guy that could be a sleeper for us that people don’t know about yet because he wasn’t picked in the first five rounds. We are expecting big things from both of these guys.

Draft Picks Visit RFK

Courtesy of Bill Ladson at MLB.com:

Shortstop Stephen King, the Nationals’ third-round pick in the 2006 First-Year Player Draft, was at Robert F. Kennedy Stadium on Wednesday afternoon. Around 3:15 p.m. ET, King took batting practice and received hitting tips from manager Frank Robinson. The skipper told the pupil to stay on top of the ball, not get under it and never lift his front shoulder. King considers himself a doubles hitter, but he expects to hit home runs in the future.

Buried further down in the article was this:

Right-hander Sean Black is expected to visit the Nationals on Saturday when they play the Yankees at home. He was drafted by Washington in the second round last week.

King and Black are likely to be the most difficult signings of the first six selections (all high schoolers) due to their desire to play college ball (at LSU and Seton Hall respectively) with designs on improving their draft stock.

Thanks to Baseball America, we know what the average bonuses was for each draft pick over the past three years.  The #59 pick (where Black was chosen) in the draft has received an average bonus of $585K while the #91 selection (where King was chosen) received an average bonus of $420K.

Both Black and King will likely command significantly higher than average in order to forgo their college scholarships and begin their professional careers.  This is where the challenge arises for the Nationals.  While MLB does not have an official slotting bonus rule (like the NBA), it does identify a guideline it expects their teams to follow.  Teams need to notify MLB if they plan on exceeding what is considered the norm for a draft pick.  MLB, specifically MLB labor counsel Frank Coonelly, will “encourage” team ownership to stick to the guidelines.

It will bear watching to see if Stan Kasten pushes the envelope in line with his plan to rebuild the Nationals from the farm up.
