Two More Into the Fold

Apologies for the lack of postings over the weekend.

The Nationals added two more prospects to their farm system over the weekend, signing a draft pick and an international free agent.

On Friday, the Nationals signed their second 2nd round draft pick, high school SS Stephen Englund who will move to CF with the Nationals.  Englund agreed to deal with a bonus of $515K and is scheduled to report to the GCL Nationals along side fellow draft picks Chris Marrero and Colton Willems.  This leaves three of the top six draft picks unsigned, pitchers Sean Black & Glenn Gibson and SS Stephen King.  Black and King are likely to be the toughest signings.

And yesterday, the Nationals added to their haul by signing one of the top 10 international prospects, 16-year old SS Esmeily Gonzalez from the Dominican Republic.  Gonzalez agreed to a deal that included a $1.4 million signing bonus (comparable to the deal agreed to by 1st round SP Colton Willems).  Gonzalez has drwan comparison to players from Rafael Furcal to Miguel Tejada to Ozzie Smith.  His age will prevent him from playing in the US until next year, so he will play for the Nationals Dominican Summer League team.
