Nats Hire Mike Rizzo

The long-rumored hiring of former Arizona Diamondbacks Scouting Director Mike Rizzo was completed today when Rizzo was named the Assistant GM and Vice President of Baseball Operations by GM Jim Bowden.

The highly respected Rizzo is considered one of the top talent evaluators in the major leagues. Rizzo assumed his position with the Diamondbacks in 2000. During his tenure, the Diamondbacks’ farm system showed marked improvement (ratings from Baseball America):

  • 2001 - #29: The Diamondbacks sacrificed a farm system in order to win the World Series in 2001. Most of their viable prospects were dealt away to secure a World Championship.
  • 2002 - #23: Rizzo began his rebuilding process in earnest, highlighted by the drafting/signing of four players (Mike Gosling, Scott Hairston, Lino Garcia, and Jason Bulger) who immediately were among the top 10 prospects in the organization.
  • 2003 - #21: While some of the premium prospects were derailed by injury, several late round draft picks began to shine (2000 8th rounder Brandon Webb and 2001 7th round selection Chad Tracy)
  • 2004 - #13: As the Diamondbacks began paying for their all-or-nothing effort in 2001, Rizzo was relied upon to provide the team with viable major leaguers in the near term. Chad Tracy continued his climb up the ladder, and 2003 first round selections Conor Jackson and Carlos Quentin burst on the scene.
  • 2005 - #13: This rating was lower because 2004 first rounder Stephen Drew was unsigned. Drew slid to the Diamondbacks due to signability concerns, but according to most was the #1 talent available in the 2004 draft. The Diamondbacks subsequently signed him further strengthening a farm system flush with high level prospects.
  • 2006 - #4: Once again, their rating was based without the inclusion of another unsigned first round pick, this time #1 overall pick Justin Upton. And again, the Diamondbacks delivered on the signing of Upton, providing the club with an abundance of riches in the farm system, including Stephen Drew, Conor Jackson, and Carlos Quentin.

Rizzo takes over a franchise in Washington with similar concerns to those he faced in his early years in Arizona. The Expos/Nationals have ranked in the bottom third (#29 in 2003; #30 in 2004; #26 in 2005; and #24 in 2006). Unlike Arizona, the chief reason was MLB’s neglect of the organization while ownership remained in limbo.

Rizzo will oversee the Baseball Operations with three key components: Director of Amateur Scouting (currently overseen by Dana Brown), Director of Professional Scouting and Director of International Scouting. Brown has done a remarkable job handling the amateur draft, identifying and drafting Chad Cordero, Bill Bray (since dealt to Cincinnati), and Ryan Zimmerman — all of whom became key contributors to the Nationals almost immediately. And in 2006, he was like a kid in the candy store drafting a slew of high-ceiling high school players (including recent signees Chris Marrero, Colton Willems, and Stephen Englund) as part of the Stan Kasten plan to rebuild the farm system.

The other two positions have yet to be filled. There have been rumors that the Nationals have sought permission to speak with Minnesota Twins Scouting Director, Mike Radcliff, presumably to fill the Director of Professional Scouting position. Radcliff was the architect behind the strong Twins drafts of the last five years.

It’s clear that the Nationals and Stan Kasten are wasting no time in putting the best possible people in place in the organization to best serve the long term health of the organization.

Senators Game Report 07/23/06

AKRON 8 HARRISBURG 3 by Chip Millard

The Harrisburg Senators fell today on City Island to the Akron Aeros 8-3, allowing Akron to win the 5 game weekend series. The Senators jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 1st inning on Dan Dement and Prentice Redman singles (with a Kory Casto groundout allowing Dement to move to 2nd base before Redman’s hit).

However, Harrisburg starting pitcher Oscar Alvarez gave up four straight 2-out hits in the 2nd inning, giving the Aeros a 3-1 lead. Akron led the rest of the way, extending their lead to 4-1 in the 5th inning on a home run and then scoring 4 more times in the last 3 innings with the assistance of some poor relief pitching and defense. The hosts only other runs of the game came in the 8th inning on a double by Kory Casto and a 2-run homer by Frank Diaz. The homer cut the lead to 7-3 but by that point it was too little, too late for the Senators.

General game notes:

  • The Senators committed 4 errors in the game, though none of the runs given up by the pitchers were unearned. Seth Bynum committed 2 errors, and Kory Casto and Greg Thissen each committed 1 error. Bynum actually could have been charged with a third error, as he probably should have stopped Casto’s wide throw from left field that allowed an Akron runner to take an extra base after a single.
  • Relief pitcher Alex Morales, a recent call-up from Potomac, was very wild, giving up 4 walks and 2 runs, despite not giving up any hits.

Individual player notes:

  • Kory Casto - officially went 1 for 3 with a double, walk, and a run scored. His batting average is sitting at .291 and his OBP and SLG percentages remain above .400 and .500 respectively. In the field he committed the throwing error mentioned above while playing LF.
  • Frank Diaz - was 1 for 4 with a 2-run homer, his 7th of the season, in his third game (day) back after returning from injury. He started in CF and made a few nice but unspectacular plays.
  • Salomon Manriquez - continues to be in a hitting slump, as he went 0 for 3 and saw his average drop to .244. He did draw a walk. He was a bit shaky at times behind the plate and gave up 4 steals, though at least 2 of them were more off the pitcher than him and the umpire appeared to make a bad call on another one of the steals (which saw Manriquez make a perfect throw).
  • Tim Raines Jr. - was 0 for 3 with 2 walks out of the leadoff spot. He moved over to RF with the return of Frank Diaz.
  • Prentice Redman - went 1 for 4 with a single and RBI. He was the DH today.
  • Josh Whitesell - cooled off a bit today, going 0 for 3 with a walk. His batting average is still a respectable .275. He was acceptable at 1st base.

Oscar Alvarez - picked up the loss, going 6 1/3 innings and giving up 5 runs on 9 hits and 1 walk. He also struck out 5 men.

  • According to FoxSports’ Ken Rosenthal, Diamondbacks scouting director Mike Rizzo is on the verge of becoming the No. 2 man to Nationals general manager Jim Bowden, according to major-league sources. Rizzo’s exact title has yet to be determined.
    • Arizona Republic echoes the news.  “Rizzo has spent the past seven seasons in the organization, including the past six as the head of amateur scouting, a period in which the Diamondbacks drafted players such as Brandon Webb, Chad Tracy, Conor Jackson and Carlos Quentin.”
  • Also from Rosenthal, the Chicago White Sox have rumoredly jumped into the Alfonso Soriano sweepstakes, presumably to drive the price up for Detroit

Minor Considerations

From around the internet, here are a few highlights:

*The New Orleans Times-Picayune has a note suggesting the Nationals have recalled OF Ryan Church, possibly to replace an injured Alex Escobar.

*Fredericksburg Free-Lance Star writer Todd Jacobson has a blog. Todd is one of the few local guys who provides consistent coverage of the minor leagues.

MLB.com Nationals beat writer Bill Ladson had this nugget:

Third baseman Dustin Dickerson, drafted in the 15th round of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft, took batting practice with the Nationals on Friday afternoon. He got off to a slow start, but started to hit line drives toward the end.
Dickerson said he and Washington have not begun negotiating a professional contract. He signed a letter of intent to go to Baylor University, but is leaning toward playing Minor League baseball for the Nationals.

This is great news, if true. Dickerson was considered a second to fourth round talent who slid due to beliefs that his commitment to Baylor was too strong. From Baseball America

One of the top high school hitters in Texas this spring, Dickerson should go off the board somewhere between the second and fourth rounds. He incorporates his hands well into his swing and employs a sound whole-field approach. At 6-foot-4 and 205 pounds, he offers plenty of strength and raw power. He also has displayed an aptitude for making adjustments at the plate. While Dickerson isn’t one-dimensional, he’ll be drafted mainly for his bat. He has good athleticism and speed for his size, and he played wide receiver on Midway High’s district champion football team. But he has just adequate arm strength and glovework at third base, so he might move to an outfield corner or first base down the road. He’s a good student committed to Baylor, but he should sign if he gets drafted as high as expected.

*Major tip of the cap to Jonathan Helfgott, theguy behind Global Baseball. He sent me a link to a Listin Diario article on Esmailin Gonzalez, the Nationals big signing out of the Dominican Republic.

Here is a rough translation:

[From] extreme poverty to wealth.

Ana Mercedes Mars, the mother of Esmailin González, will not have more to late remove each her loaded table from fried foods: meats, yucca and guineítos (type of food) to install its fritura, that is several years old being the favorite place to have supper of many of the residents in Pisarrete, an impoverished sector of the district San Antonio in Baní.

In just a short time, the poor woman and humble house that has been their home for more than one decade will become a sad memory. Its physical structure represents the most suitable picture of the humble and close state in which it has developed the life of Esmailin, second from a family of six children of Ana Mercedes and Daniel González Martinez, who dedicates himself to the agricultural works.

Within months they will not have to look for “sellalotó” to cover the holes during the rains.

Like a many other young Dominican players, baseball will change the life of Esmailin and his family after the youngster finishes signed a $1.4M contract with the Washington Nationals.

How much is that? A little more than 45 million times the minimum wage.

There will be no more poverty for the González, as if they were touched by a magical wand, his way of living has been transformed by the heavens. Because in this house was a player who in a relatively short time would become desired by more than a dozen of Major League teams.

Many have projected Esmailin to have a glove like Ozzie Smith, and generate an offense like Miguel Tejada, but aside from these comparisons of his athletic abilities, he is till a young an inexperienced player.

Before buying a luxurious car, the first thing that Esmailin will do is build a house for his mother, Ana Mercedes, with all the comforts that his parents deserve. Because they made a tooth and nail effort to raise this family of six.

“The vehicles will come later, I am not in a hurry to buy it, to make my parents and brothers comfortable is the first thing,” said Gonzalez speaking with a security unknown in a young person of 16 years.

As if he already felt hunger to leave the poverty, González took refuge early in baseball and little by little developed the qualities that recently have made him one of the highes prospects in the country.

“The conditions he grew up in was something that affected me and I tried to help him as much as I could,” expressed Jose Lust, special Assistant of Jim Bowden who along with Basilio Vizcaíno, Gonzalez’ agent, and Jose Báez helped in the signing of González.

Before in buying mansions, Esmailin wants to continue cultivating its abilities, because many scouts have already compared him to the best existing talent in their position.

He wants to prove that the experts were no wrong.

*Also at Global Baseball, a link to the attendees at MLB’s second annual European Baseball Academy from July 27 through August 18 at the Italian Olympic Training Centre in Tirrenia, Italy.  The MLB European Academy is run by former Major League manager and player Jim Lefebvre, Bruce Hurst, Lee Smith and Hall of Famer Rod Carew.  Hopefully the Nationals will have a few scouts in attendance.

Global Baseball - An Interesting Perspective

Digging around the internet this morning turned up the following site, Global Baseball. It’s a blog that will be updated by a person (jhelfgott) who is “currently working on a year-long research project on the globalization of baseball, courtesy of the Thomas J. Watson Foundation. Over the next 12 months, [the] project will take [the writer] to the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Australia, Puerto Rico, Okinawa, and Venezuela.”

In his first posting, he mentions a Nationals prospect pitching in the Dominican Summer League (DSL), RP Atahualpa Severino. I had never heard of Severino prior to reading this posting, so I’ll leave it to the writer:

Severino’s a 21-year-old working his way back from Tommy John surgery, and has been dominant on a level considered incredible even for the pitching-friendly DSL. It’s rare to see a 21-year-old still hanging around the DSL, but when an organization decides to keep a player around that long, chances are he’s either suffered a setback due to injury, or he’s a lefthanded pitcher. Severino is both. The report, featured in yesterday’s Listin Diario, was concerned primarily with detailing Severino’s success (44 strikeouts and walked 3 in 18 innings, good for a 0.50 ERA), and repertoire (fastball sitting in the 90-92 range, and a quality curve and slider). While we get precious little in the way of a backstory here, it does say that Severino signed for a $6,000 bonus a few years ago. This is his second season in the DSL, and his first since his surgery last year. Players are only allowed a maximum of 3 years before they’re either released or sent up to their teams’ US system.

From first blush, those numbers are absolutely astounding. Forty-four strikeouts in eighteen innings pitched? That’s 22K/9IP! Those are astounding strike out numbers without even mentioning a 1.5BB/9IP which leads to an unbelievable 14.7K/B rate. His results need to be tempered with the level of competition. The DSL is considered the lowest level of competition in comparison to even the Rookie leagues (i.e the GCL Nats play in a more challenging league). His age (21) and injury history (Tommy John surgery) are a concern as well, but it’s promising to see that a player, a LHP no less, is developing well for the Nationals.

The discussion of Severino raises a larger issue for someone attempting to track the Nationals minor league system. The guys playing in the Dominican Republic or Venezuela (the Nationals are not there this year) are very difficult to follow. Box scores are few and far between. Cumulative statistics are notoriously slow (and in some cases incomplete). MiLB.com has some of the statistics, usually a few days behind, and unfortunately this season stopped carrying the DSL box scores. This leads to local newspapers (like the Listin Diario) where a knowledge of conversational Spanish is a must. And even then, it can be spotty.

I guess what I’m trying to say is “Thank You” to the author of the blog. You are providing an insight to me and indirectly my readers. I look forward to your updates from around the globe.

Nowhere to Go But Up - Pitching

Yesterday, I presented a view of the Nationals’ draft picks from the offensive side. Today, I’ll take a look at the pitching (ages and statistics through 7/15/06).

The Nationals drafted and signed 13 pitchers in 2005.

Player Age Tm G GS GF SV IP ERA WHIP K/9 BB/9 HR/9
Estrada 23 GCL 5 4 0 0 23.67 1.52 0.85 10.3 2.3 0.4
Spradlin 21 VER 6 6 0 0 26.00 2.42 1.31 6.6 2.1 1.0
SAV 17 0 5 0 30.67 4.70 1.57 8.5 3.8 0.3
Lannan 21 SAV 19 17 1 0 88.67 5.58 1.64 7.6 4.2 0.9
Stammen 22 SAV 19 19 0 0 102.33 3.08 1.17 7.4 2.3 0.7
Enriquez 22 VER 1 0 0 0 0.67 27.00 6.00 0.0 26.9 0.0
Watkins 18 GCL 1 0 0 0 0.00 inf inf 0.0 inf inf
Palm 23 DNP
Pichardo 18 GCL 4 0 0 0 4.67 15.43 3.21 9.6 23.1 0.0
Clark 19 DNP
Shefka 22 SAV 12 8 3 0 48.67 5.18 1.42 4.4 2.2 1.1
Mavroulis 23 SAV 15 0 8 2 22.33 4.84 1.70 5.6 6.0 0.4
Evangelista 23 DNP
Taylor 22 VER 7 0 2 0 6.33 0.00 1.42 11.4 2.8 0.0

As with the bats, it is clear that the Nationals focused almost entirely on college-aged pitchers practically to the exclusion of any high school aged arms. Michael Watkins’ 2005 was cut short by injury and it appears that 2006 has presented the same issues with only one appearance that resulted in a walk. Bradley Clark was drafted in 2005 with a high ceiling but some possible make-up issues. His 2006 season was short circuited before it started due to a suspension for violating team rules. The final young arm, Eduardo Pichardo, has struggled with walks (9 in 4.33IP). Of the older arms, there are: some promising possibilities in Marco Estrada (recently promoted to Vermont), Craig Stammen providing solid IP as a SP for Savannah, and Jeff Taylor in brief relief appearances for Vermont; injuries to Josh Palm (Tommy John surgery); but mostly average to poor performances.

The Nationals signed one 2005 selection as a Draft and Follow in 2006:

Player Age Tm G GS GF SV IP ERA WHIP K/9 BB/9 HR/9
Buchter 19 GCL 5 1 1 0 5.67 7.94 3.00 6.3 9.5 0.0

Buchter was likely signed for one reason, he is left-handed.

The Nationals have signed 12 of their 2006 Draft picks so far:

Player Age Tm G GS GF SV IP ERA WHIP K/9 BB/9 HR/9
Willems 17 GCL 2 2 0 0 5.00 1.80 1.20 3.6 1.8 1.8
Van Allen 21 VER 5 1 4 0 15.00 2.40 1.20 9.0 3.0 0.0
Zinicola 21 VER 8 0 8 4 9.00 0.00 0.78 10.0 1.0 0.0
POT 2 0 2 0 3.00 6.00 2.00 3.0 3.0 0.0
Jones 20 GCL 2 0 0 0 2.00 0.00 2.50 18.0 18.0 0.0
Kimball 20 VER 5 2 0 0 10.33 5.23 1.94 4.4 7.0 0.9
Arnesen 22 VER 5 2 0 0 16.67 3.24 1.44 4.3 2.2 0.0
Carr 22 GCL 5 0 2 0 5.67 1.59 0.88 9.5 3.2 0.0
Tavarez 22 DSL 1 0 0 1.33 0.00 2.26 6.8 0.0 0.0
Pfau 22 VER 5 0 1 0 6.33 1.42 0.79 5.7 2.8 0.0
Baldwin 23 VER 6 1 0 0 15.33 4.70 1.76 5.9 3.5 0.0
Welsh 21 GCL 4 0 1 0 9.33 0.96 0.86 5.8 2.9 0.0
Anderson 22 GCL 3 0 1 0 2.67 0.00 0.75 6.7 3.4 0.0
VER 2 0 0 0 2.00 4.50 1.50 4.5 0.0 0.0

As with the bats, the jury is still out. But the targeting of Colton Willems early as a high ceiling high school arm is a promising change in direction. And it is clear that unlike 2005, high schoolers were the focus.  And if the Nationals can wrap up their draft class by signing up two other high school picks in Sean Black (committed to Seton Hall) and Glenn Gibson (committed to the University of Central Florida), the foundation on the mound will begin.

As a whole, it appears the Nationals have begun to unveil their strategy to rebuild the farm system. It’s going to take several more drafts to feel comfortable that they are headed in the right direction.
