Guillen to DL/Dorta Recalled

The Washington Nationals today placed right fielder Jose Guillen on the 15-Day Disabled List, retroactive to July 19, with right elbow soreness.  The Nationals are expected to purchase the contract of utility infielder Melvin Dorta from Harrisburg of the Double-A Eastern League prior to tomorrow’s series opener vs. Chicago (NL).  Nationals Vice President and General Manager Jim Bowden made the announcements (link)

With the elbow injury to Jose Guillen, the Nationals are scheduled to recall utility guy Melvin Dorta.  The 24-year old Dorta has spent the entire season in Harrisburg batting 277// with 15 doubles, 4HR and 24 RBI in 85 games with 25SB in 33 attempts.

Senators manager John Stearns believes a player like Dorta is an invaluable resource to a team.  His ability to play seven positions capably (everywhere but pitcher and catcher) will provide Frank Robinson with added flexibility to make subsitutions.

NATIONALS RHP JOHN PATTERSON HAS SUCCESSFUL EXPLORATORY SURGERY ON RIGHT FOREARM

Washington Nationals right-handed pitcher John Patterson had successful exploratory surgery performed this morning on his right forearm by Nationals Orthopedist Dr. Ben Shaffer and Nationals hand consultant Dr. Richard Barth at Sibley Hospital in Washington, DC. During the 75-minute procedure, Patterson’s lacertus fibrosis was released and the median nerve was explored and decompressed.  Several areas of constriction within the nerve were released, thus leaving the nerve healthy and free of compression. Patterson, 28, will be in a splint for one week, at which time he will begin range of motion and strength exercises.  He is expected to be out approximately 4-6 weeks. (link)

MATTHEW LeCROY GRANTED UNCONDITIONAL RELEASE

The Washington Nationals today granted catcher/first baseman Matthew LeCroy his unconditional release.  Nationals Vice President and General Manager Jim Bowden made the announcement. The 30 year-old LeCroy batted .239 (16-for-77) with two home runs and nine RBI in 39 games for the Nationals. (link)

Nowhere To Go But Up - Hitters

Preston Williams of Washington Post has a very good review of the Nationals farm system and the challenges faced by Stan Kasten, Jim Bowden, Dana Brown, and the rest of the Nationals’ organization.

Below is a view of how the players selected by the Washington Nationals (i.e. players brought into the organization in 2005-06) have performed so far this season. (Ages and statistics through July 15)

First, the hitters:

2004 Draft-and-Follow signing …

Player Age POS Tm G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB SO SB/Att BA/OBP/SLG
Peacock 21 CA SAV 71 252 41 65 13 2 10 35 22 77 1/1 258/330/444

Brian Peacock was signed in 2005 as a draft-and-follow.  He has had an up and down season for the Sand Gnats in 2006.  He began the season hitting strong in April and May (18/23 of his extra-base hits  including 7/10 HR in those months).  Despite his struggles, Peacock is one of the stronger catching options in the Nationals’ farm system (which further emphasizes the organizational depth problem).

2005 draft picks …

Player Age POS Tm G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB SO SB/Att BA/OBP/SLG
Zimmerman 21 3B WAS 92 356 52 104 29 1 12 60 35 75 7/13 292/356/480

Zimmerman’s performance speaks for itself.  An organization should consider itself lucky to receive such immediate dividends.  The rest of the selections provide more detail into this point

But drafting older players, who can reach the major leagues faster but are less likely to make the marked improvements that high school players can make, did nothing to restock the farm system.

With the exception of Ryan Delaughter and perhaps Justin Maxwell & Mike Daniel, most of the Nationals draft picks on offense are at an age where their ceilings are clearly defined and in most cases, they have reached.  23-year old players in Short Season Vermont do not provide the foundation that Kasten is emphasizing.  Justin Maxwell has been hyped as a potential first rounder who slid to the fourth round due to injury.  Unfortunately for the Nationals, injuries have continued to plague Maxwell in his professional debut.  A broken toe sidelined him early for A-Ball Savannah and he has been non-descript in his performance in Vermont thus far.  On the other hand, Mike Daniel has excelled in his short time in Vermont, displaying solid plate patience as well as some solid baserunning.  The only question mark is that it took a demotion from Savannah to Vermont to spark his improvement.  Only time will tell if he can carry those numbers forward.  The lone foundation piece for offense would be Ryan Delaughter, and his performance thus far in 2006 is not as encouraging as one would hope.  Delaughter is precisely the type of person who would benefit from playing with the premium level high schoolers the Nationals selected in 2006.  Those guys would likely push Delaughter and ideally drive him further than he may be able to do so on his own.

2006 draft picks …

Goldschmeding 22 SS VER 22 72 10 15 2 1 0 4 6 15 1/2 208/278/264

It’s far too early to derive anything from these results, and hoepfully the names Stephen King and Dustin Dickerson (a long shot, I know) will be added to this draft class.  The Nationals have begun the rebuilding process with the selections of Marrero and Englund.  It’s these types of players that will allow the foundation of the organization to be truly set.  I would expect that the Nationals are likely to follow a similar path drafting high ceiling high schoolers in the 2007 draft and perhaps even in 2008.  As Dana Brown said, “You have to think long term … it takes time.”

Pitchers to follow.

What a Relief

A frequently metioned concern with the trading of Gary Majewski and Bill Bray is who the Nationals will look to fill in their spots in the bullpen. The first answer was made known from the original press release, LSU grad Roy Corcoran, who put up solid numbers as the closer for both New Orleans and Harrisburg in 2006. The second name was announced as replacement for SP John Patterson who was placed on the 15-day DL with continued arm problems. On his way to Washington is veteran RP Kevin Gryboski.

While the losses of Majewski and Bray may appear troubling on the surface, there is one certainty when it comes to RPs in the bullpen.  There is no certainty.

Take as an example, Gary Majewski.  Majewski came out of nowhere in 2005 proving an invaluable arm for the Nationals.  But many have forgotten, he was only added to the bullpen when RP Antonio Osuna was placed on the DL with a right shoulder strain on April 18.  Prior to that, Majewski was the other guy acquired with Jon Rauch from the White Sox in exchange for Carl Everett.  Majewski’s minor league numbers at that point were pedestrian (see table below), he had a solid K/9 rate but his BB/9 rate (nearly 4BB per 9IP) was not the thing one would look for out of a RP.

Outside of their closer and perhaps one set-up guy, most teams do not have any idea who is going to excel in the role of middle relief pitcher.

Some certainties flame out due to overuse or injury.

Some journeyman RPs have bounce back seasons with the addition of a new pitch.

Younger players with resilient arms flash signs of brilliance.

The point is that the Nationals have options to replace Majewski and Bray in the bullpen.  The problem is identifying them.  And that is likely going to be by trial-and-error.  And given the Nationals position in the pennant chase, they have nothing but the time to figure out who is a worthwhile option and who doesn’t fit their plans.

Below is a table of the career numbers of the two players lost (Majewski and Bray), the two players added (Corcoran and Gryboski) as well as three other options currently pitching in New Orleans.

As you can see, the numbers put up by Corcoran, Hughes, Bergmann, and even Campbell are not that out of line with what Majewski did in the minor leagues.  He just excelled in the opportunity provided him and more importantly, gained the confidence of Frank Robinson to be used in relief.

Corcoran was a deserved choice.  In his 37 appearances in 2006, the 26-year old RHP threw 44.33IP with a 1.22ERA, 1.08WHIP, 13.0K/9, 5.0BB/9, and 0.2HR/9.  While the walk totals are troubling, Corcoran had demonstrated that he was a capable option out of the bullpen who could keep the ball in the park and possessed a stron ability to strike guys out.  His first outing was a bit rough around the edges, Corcoran deserves every opportunity to prove whether he deserves to stick around.

The other choice in Gryboski is a bit more questionable.  The 32-year old journeyman RHP has put up unspectacular numbers in 46.67IP in New Orleans (3.86ERA, 1.50WHIP, 6K/9, 4BB/9, and 0.6HR/9).  The only conclusion is that the Nationals felt the need to add more experience to their bullpen.

The Nationals have made their selections to address the immediate need.  They now need to give Corcoran and Gryboski every opportunity to perform.  But if either are to fail, there is no need to worry.  There are other options waiting in the wings.

Senators Game Reports

FRIDAY GAME: READING 7 HARRISBURG 6 by Chip Millard

The Harrisburg Senators lost a strange game tonight to the Reading Phillies, 7-6. Early on in the game, the R-Phils dominated, scoring 2 runs on a home run in the 1st, a single unearned run in the 3rd, and 2 more runs (again on a home run) in the 4th off of Harrisburg starter Justin Echols to take a 5-0 lead. Meanwhile, the Senators mounted minor rallies in the first 3 innings but were unable to get a big hit. They also played some shoddy defense. Harrisburg started its comeback in the bottom of the 4th, using a Kory Casto single and 2-run homer to left-center by Prentice Redman to cut the deficit to 5-2. The hosts then scored 3 more times in 5th to tie the game. They loaded the bases with 1 out on an Echols leadoff single, a Tim Raines Jr. walk, and another Casto single. That brought up Redman again, and he responded with a double that landed on the LF foul line on the warning track, driving in Echols and Raines to make the score 5-4. Josh Whitesell then grounded out softly to 2nd base, knocking in Casto to tie the game 5-5. Reading responded with a run in the top of the 6th to reclaim the lead at 6-5, but the Senators immediately tied the game in the bottom of the frame, using a 2-out, nobody on dropped fly ball error to LF by the R-Phils on a ball hit by Jesus Feliciano, a walk by Melvin Dorta, and an RBI single by Raines to tie the game again at 6-6. The game stayed that way until the top of the 9th, when reliever Jeremy Plexico, in his 3rd inning of work (as a result of a worn-out Harrisburg bullpen from Thursday night’s 11-3 loss to Reading), gave up a solo home run to Reading’s Gary Burnham with 2 outs. It was Burnham’s second homer of the game. The hosts mounted a 2-out rally in the bottom of the frame after a Casto single and Redman walk, but Whitesell weakly grounded out to 2nd on the first pitch he saw to end the threat and the game.

Individual player notes:

  • Kory Casto - enjoyed a 3 for 4 night with 3 singles, a walk, and 2 runs scored. He’s now hitting .296 and has OBP/SLG/OPS numbers of 410/.524/.934. Casto played solidly in LF, and made one of the best defensive plays of the game after he moved to 3rd base, robbing a Reading player of a base hit on a bunt attempt in the 9th inning by making a bare-handed play and an off-balance but accurate throw to 1st base.
  • Salomon Manriquez - had a quiet 0 for 4 night at the plate. He’s now hitting .266 and has OPS component numbers of .339/.374/.713. Behind the plate, he played solidly, throwing out a baserunner after a pitch got away from him a little. (His throw did bounce into 2nd, but was accurate and quick.)
  • Prentice Redman - enjoyed a big game, going 2 for 4 with a 2-run homer, a 2-run double, a walk, 4 RBI’s, and a run scored.
  • Tim Raines Jr. - went 2 for 4 with 2 singles, a walk, an RBI and a run scored. He’s hitting a solid .314 since joining the Senators.
  • Melvin Dorta - had a quiet 0 for 4 night with 1 walk at the plate. He did make 2 great plays in the field after moving to 2nd base however, robbing one R-Phils player of a hit after going hard to his right and throwing across his body to get the runner at 1st base to end the 8th inning, and then making a fine charge on the ball and glove hand toss to 1st on a bunt attempt to record the first out in the 9th inning.
  • Justin Echols - struggled in his 5 1/3 innings of work, giving up 6 runs (5 earned) on 8 hits (2 homers) and 3 walks. He did strike out 5 batters.
  • Jeremy Plexico - pitched well in relief but was the hard-luck loser. He worked 3 1/3 innings and gave up only one hit and one walk. Unfortunately the hit was the R-Phils’ game-winning homer in the 9th inning.

SUNDAY GAME: READING 8 HARRISBURG 1 by Chip Millard

The Harrisburg Senators gave up 8 runs over the final 2 innings to fall to the Reading Phillies 8-1, completing a 4-game sweep for the R-Phils. For the first 7 innings the game was a pitchers’ duel, as the rehabbing major leaguers Ryan Drese and Randy Wolf and usual starters Beltran Perez (Harrisburg) and Zach Segovia (Reading) continually put down minor rallies. The Senators took a 1-0 lead off of Wolf in the 3rd inning, as his opposite number Drese singled to LF to lead off the inning, Melvin Dorta walked, Tim Raines Jr. sacrificed both runners a base on an excellent bunt, and Kory Casto drove in Drese on an RBI groundout. Both Perez and Segovia continued to pitch well in the middle innings and it remained 1-0 Harrisburg until the pivotal 8th inning. The R-Phils scored 5 times in that inning, notching 2 runs off of Perez (one after he left the game) and 3 more off of an ineffective Dan Kolb. The key plays were a passed ball by catcher Josh Emmerick that gave Reading the lead and a ball that was hit up the middle with the bases loaded that deflected off 2nd baseman Dan Dement’s outstretched glove, allowing 2 more runs to score. (The official scorer ruled the play a hit, but I would have scored it either a hit and an error or an error all the way - Dement would have a hard time even making a force at 2nd but should have fielded the ball, and his inability to keep the ball in the infield allowed the runner originally at 2nd base to score.) The Senators went quietly in the bottom of the 8th, and the R-Phils tacked on 3 more runs off of Kolb in the 9th inning to make the score 8-1. The hosts failed to score in the bottom of the 9th, keeping them winless since the Eastern League All-Star Break.

Individual player notes:

  • Kory Casto - like much of the rest of the lineup, he had a quiet day, going 0 for 4, though he did have an RBI and also reached base on an error. He didn’t make any plays of note, positively or negatively, in left field.
  • Prentice Redman - went 1 for 4 with a single at the plate, dropping his average to .315. In RF, he misplayed a ball that fell for a hit and contributed to Reading’s 3-run 9th inning.
  • Tim Raines Jr. - officially went 0 for 2 at the plate with a walk and a sacrifice bunt. Raines played solid but unspectacular in center field.
  • Josh Whitesell - was 1 for 3 with a single and a walk. He also made a couple nice plays at 1st base, though he was unable to catch a foul pop-up behind 1st base near the stands on a play that was difficult but makeable.
  • Melvin Dorta - went 0 for 3 with a walk at the plate and played acceptably in the field at 3rd base.
  • Dan Dement - was 2 for 4 with 2 singles and was the only Senators player with more than 1 hit. He struggled somewhat at 2nd base, both on the play mentioned in the game summary above and on a ball that short-hopped him and ate him up earlier in the game.
  • Ryan Drese - pitched solidly in his rehab start, pitching 3 scoreless innings and giving 2 hits, 1 walk, and 1 HBP while striking out 2 batters. He also had a single, though it appeared he could have tried for a double (the ball was hit down the RF line) had he been running hard.
  • Beltran Perez - took the loss in the game, giving up 2 runs on 4 hits and 1 walk in 4 1/3 innings. He didn’t pitch badly, but he did struggle at times running deep counts. He fell to 6-4 on the season with a 3.56 ERA (it was 3.52 coming into the game).
  • Dan Kolb - had possibly his worst outing of the season, giving up 6 runs on 5 hits, 3 walks (2 intentional, including the first batter he faced), and 1 HBP in only 1 2/3 innings. Both of the batters intentionally walked later scored.
