Casto - Eastern League Rookie of the Year

Portland, ME — The Eastern League of Professional Baseball is pleased to announce that Kory Casto of the Harrisburg Senators has been selected as the 2006 Eastern League Rookie of the Year. The 6’1”, 190 lb. slugger, who has played games at both third base and in the outfield this season, is currently ranked in the top 10 in nearly every offensive category in the league, including runs scored (77-1st), games played (128-1st), RBI (78-2nd), total bases (221-2nd), walks (74-2nd), on-base percentage (.384-3rd), homers (20-tied 3rd), OPS (.876-4th), slugging percentage (.492-6th), triples (5-tied 6th) and hits (126-7th). Casto, ranked by Baseball America as the fifth best prospect in the Nationals organization entering this season, was selected as the Eastern League Player of the Week for the week ending June 18th, was named the Eastern League Player of the Month for June and was selected as an outfielder for the 2006 Eastern League All-Star Team. The Aurora, Oregon native was also a member of the Southern Division team at the 2006 Eastern League All-Star Game and was selected by Baseball America as having the “Best Strike Zone Judgment” in the Eastern League this season.

Kory, who hit .290 with 36 doubles, 22 homers, 90 RBI and 86 runs scored in 135 games with Single-A Potomac last year, was selected as the Washington Nationals 2006 Minor League Player of the Year. Casto was originally selected by the Montreal Expos in the third round of the June 2003 draft after hitting .338 (69-for-204) with 19 doubles, 14 homers, 57 RBI, 43 runs scored, a .446 on-base percentage and a .637 slugging percentage in 55 games during his junior season at the University of Portland.
