So, you think that was Marco Estrada’s first mention in the Washington Post?

Personally, I felt that fluff piece Svrluga wrote this morning was insulting to those fans who do know what is going on. This farm system hasn’t made any great strides this year; some good progress perhaps, but we still do not have ANY legit blue chip prospects. There are a couple of players here or there, but to say our system is anywhere but the bottom 2 or 3 in all of baseball is completely false.

Gee, Ryan, all Svrluga says is this, which is pretty darn halting and qualified: “Opposing scouts might offer differing opinions, but the Nationals’ system — which has been notoriously weak — has been replenished, to a degree.” Maybe that’s still too sunny for you, but he certainly doesn’t say the farm systems ranks anywhere in particular or anything else that I would consider “completely false” (which is a pretty serious charge to make about a reporter).

Sam-
My argument was that the article does not have a point, but to make the claim that the farm system is making great strides because guys can “throw in the 90s” or other nonsense is ridiculous.
For example, my father, a somewhat lukewarm Nationals fan, calls me this morning and tells me I am full of “you know what” cause I have been telling him for over a year how terrible the farm system is. And he uses Svrluga’s article as gospel that we aren’t far away, which as we know is crap.
Typically I like Barry, but this piece feels like a favor he did for the Nationals management people to give the public the sense that they are doing an excellent job. In the end, the piece doesn’t say anything, but conveys the message that it is completely healed and flourishing-

Fair enough - I certainly agree it doesn’t say much or contain much information of value. I don’t read it as conveying the positive spin you do, but I realize I’m not the average audience reading the thing who might see it as you describe.
Nice of your dad to serve you up the winning anecdote in this argument! :)
