Garrett Mock Out 4-5 Months

Todd Jacobson of the Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star has the news.  Garrett Mock, one of the pitchers acquired from the Diamondbacks in exchange for SP Livan Hernandez, underwent successful surgery yesterday to “repair a tear in the patella tendon of his left knee.”  It is anticipated that Mock will need 4-5 months to rehabilitate the injury.

September Roster Additions

The names of the September call-ups have come out.

The Washington Nationals tomorrow are expected to purchase the contracts of infielder Melvin Dorta, outfielder George Lombard and right-handed pitchers Chris Booker and Brett Campbell from New Orleans of the Triple-A Pacific Coast League. Right-handed pitcher Beltran Perez is also expected to have his contract purchased from Harrisburg of the Double-A Eastern League. Nationals Vice President/General Manager Jim Bowden made the announcement.

As mentioned in this morning’s farm report, RH RP Chris Booker is on his way to Washington. Joining Booker from New Orleans are RH RP Brett Campbell, OF George Lombard, and IF Melvin Dorta. Also, RH RP Beltran Perez from Harrisburg has been tabbed as a September roster call-up.

I’ve previously touched Booker, Lombard, and Dorta as possible call-up options. The trade of Daryle Ward and Marlon Anderson make Lombard’s LH bat more appealing off of the bench. Dorta can fill in as a super sub. And Booker can settle into a middle relief role in a heavily used Nationals bullpen, now down Kevin Gryboski.

Campbell’s selection seems curious given the Nationals’ plan to send him to the Arizona Fall League. GM Jim Bowden had previously stated that top prospect and AFL attendee 3B/OF Kory Casto would not be called up because he was “not a big believer in bringing up a young prospect to sit a month.” Campbell has pitched solidly in 2006, putting himself on the Nationals’ radar. If he is added some time over the next few days, Campbell will join Booker in middle relief.

Speaking of middle relief, the final name is Beltran Perez. Perez has spent the entire season in Harrisburg splitting his time between starting and relieving. He has posted a solid K/BB ratio (107/40) in his 121.2IP in 2006. Perez has bounced around the minor leagues of the DIamondbacks and Dodgers since 1999, never getting above AA. The 24-year old Perez could be called upon to pitch out of either the starting rotation or in long relief.

Nats Acquire CF Nook Logan

The Nationals outrighted RP Kevin Gryboski to New Orleans and then acquired CF Nook Logan from the Detroit Tigers

The Washington Nationals today acquired 26 year-old center fielder Nook Logan from the Detroit Tigers in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations. Nationals Vice President and General Manager Jim Bowden made the announcement.
Logan, who is perhaps best known for his speed and defensive abilities in center field, is a .264 (120-for-455) career hitter with 17 doubles, one triple, one home run, 27 RBI and 31 stolen bases in 176 games spanning parts of two big league seasons (2004-05) with Detroit.  In 2004, Logan was tabbed as Tigers Rookie of the Year by the Detroit Sports Broadcasters Association.  A year later, he was named the third-fastest runner in the American League in a Baseball America survey of league managers.  He was Detroit ’s third-round selection in the 2000 First-Year Player Draft
In 2005, Logan ’s first full big league campaign, he batted .258 (83-for-322) with 17 RBI and 23 stolen bases.  Logan’s speed allowed him to rank second among AL leaders in outfield putouts per 9.0 innings (2.9), infield hits (sixth with 27), stolen base percentage (eighth at 79%) and stolen bases (tied for ninth with 23).

Nationals Add More Arms

The Washington Nationals completed two deals under the August 31 deadline for setting postseason rosters. Washington traded away 1B/OF Daryle Ward to the Atlanta Braves and IF/OF Marlon Anderson to the Los Angeles Dodgers, each in exchange for a minor league pitcher.

Coming from Atlanta is Luis Atilano, a RHP who was the Braves first selection in the 2003 First Player draft (#35 of Gabriela Mistral HS in Puerto Rico). From the release:

Atilano went 6-7 with a 4.50 ERA in 19 games (18 starts) for Myrtle Beach of the Single-A Carolina League this season. He has not pitched since July 24, however, and on Aug. 10, had Tommy John surgery performed on his right elbow by Dr. James Andrews. Last season, while pitching for Rome, Atilano started for the Southern Division in the South Atlantic League All-Star Game.

When he was drafted in 2003, he drew comparisons to Javier Vazquez. He has a fastball that has been clocked in the low 90s and an effective sinking changeup. Atilano has added 35 lbs to his 6′3″ frame since being drafted (from 180 to 215lbs). With the Tommy John surgery, I wouldn’t expect the 21-year old being fully recovered until the 2008 season.

In exchange for Anderson, the Nationals received 20-year old RHP Jhonny Nunez. Nunez was signed by the Dodgers as a non-drafted free agent in December of 2003 out of San Jose de Las Matas, Dominican Republic. From the release:

Nunez, in his third pro season, went 6-0 with a 1.58 ERA in 10 games (seven starts) for the Gulf Coast League Dodgers in 2006, his first season playing in the United States. Nunez, who stands 6-foot-3, limited opposing GCL batters to a .177 batting average en route to leading the league in wins. He also ranked among GCL leaders in innings pitched (first with 57.0), strikeouts (second with 56) and ERA (third).

Nunez was the Dodgers Minor League Pitcher for the Month of July. He for the GCL Dodgers in the month of July, posting a 3-0 record in that month. He tossed a total of 26.1 innings surrendering only six earned runs while holding opposing batters to a .157 average against him. While a bit old for the Gulf Coast League, Nunez is another solid pitching option continuing the rebuilding of the foundation of the farm system. I’d expect to see Nunez report to the Nationals Instructional League, likely play winter ball in his native Dominican Republic, and if things break right, he could begin 2007 in A-Advanced Potomac.
