Given the new set of rules referenced in the new CBA concerning the Rule 5 draft (basically adding one year of protection to all minor leaguers), I’ve tried my best to summarize all players in the Nationals farm system that are Rule 5 eligible.
Players who were 18 or younger on June 5 preceding the signing of their first contract must be protected after five minor league seasons. Players 19 and older must be protected after four seasons.

(Ages are as of the December Rule 5 Draft)
There are some interesting names on the list. Clint Everts, Ricardo Morales (a LH RP), and Colby Lewis are the three that appear most intriguing to me. Feel free to comment on the ones that you believe bear watching.

Everts was drafted at 17yrs old in 2002 but signed an 2003 contract, he will not be eligible for this Rule 5 draft but will be for the 2007 draft.

From what I know, he signed a 2002 contract but did not play until 2003. I’m doublechecking that.

Wow! That’s probably over 80% of all the players in the system over 20 years old.
And you only think one might be interesting to other clubs. There is a lot of work to do!

Clint signed 2003 contract, on August 21, 2002 and didn’t play until June 2003 when he made his debut in the home opener for Vermont. I’m pretty sure there are others on the list that are in same boat… I know one other for sure. Brett signed a 2003 contract and finished off his degree before 2003 spring training…

Guess under the new guidelines Brett has his 4 yrs in… Does that include time they didn’t play for injury or whatever? Do you know Brian?

I’m still working on that. Some of the details I got were from folks who’d know but they could be wrong.
