Thanks for the work the issue of are the Nats (we) making progress in player development (Priority #1 of the Plan)? Yes we are but just alittle it seesm. It will be a long haul. I also think there must be a time delay from this type of information. We may be further along then these ratings can identify until the full Minor League Season gets going.....One note of disappointment is Broadway who seems to be making no movement and stuck at a C? And he is going be our first choice to start for a long absence of Nick Johnson.....ouch!

Couldn't agree with you more about Balester. Having watched him at Potomac -- and sat by him; the kids tracked pitches nearly every night, not just the night before his start -- there was an a-ha moment in mid-June that doesn't really show up in the stats, aside from his ERA dropping from the high 7's to the low 5's. From that point on, you could tell that he was starting to get it, and no longer falling apart if the opposition started to knock him around. Let's also not forget -- this kid is just 20 years old!

Wooden,
Thanks for the insight. I talked to a coach at Harrisburg who saw Balester's last 3 starts there. He was VERY impressed with Collin, especially when comparing him to Chico & Mock.

JayB,
One thing that occurred to me when I finished this is: our farm system may be bad but its primary purpose is to supply players to the Majors. And somewhat obliquely, it did so VERY well. Zimmerman, of course and Mike O'Connor had the best ERA of any starter with at least 10 starts. But trading Bray (B-), Thompson (C+), Harris (C+) with Majewski netted us Lopez and Kearns. So the case may be made the Farm supplied 4 top notch contributors last year, a big contribution. So maybe a few C's can step up like O'Connor did last year.

Vladihondo: Point well taken on Zimmerman and Bray. I am not sold on O'Connor as a major league pitcher. Kearns and Lopez were a steal.....I do not think we can could them as a by product of the Farm System by way of trade.

I just keep waiting to see us climb out of the cellar of farm systems......As Brian has schooled me it will take time but I still feel all the money we are saving at the Major League Level should go into signing draft picks not new scoreboard upgrades at the new park.

The new park is an capital investment and should not come from day to day opperations money. Same with Space Coast upgrades and the oversees sites and collaberations.

I think the Lerners know these items are long term capital improvements, they are just hoping fans do not look to hard at what they are not spending money on.......draft picks.......like BLACK!

VladiHondo & Wooden,

I saw Balester, Chico and Mock pitch at Harrisburg last season and I agree with the feedback Vladi got from a coach in Hbg. Balester looked very good. His first AA start was vs Akron and he looked strong. He only gave up two runs and had good stuff. He made Brian Barton look silly on a breaking pitch. Barton's knee's buckled and it was a called strike 3. Barton just walked away laughing. So I agree, Balester should have a higher rating.

I watched Chico twice and my biggest concern with him is he seemed to lose command after about 3-4 innings and becomes very hittable.

I was Mock one time and he was pulled early in the game due to soreness in his arm.
