The Clippers were unable to mount much of an offense against the Indians, collecting only six singles in a 5-1 loss (box/gamer). Emiliano Fruto surrendered all five runs in 5 1/3 innings of work, allowing eight hits and striking out only two. Levale Speigner made his first appearance for Columbus contributing 1 2/3 innings only walking one. Winston Abreu continued to dominate Triple-A hitters striking out seven in two innings (a wild pitch on one strikeout allowed him to K four in the ninth). LF Mike Restovich was 2/4, driving in the only Columbus run. Notes: OF Brandon Watson was optioned back to Columbus as the Nationals reinstated UTIL Robert Fick from the breavement list. Additionally, the Nationals traded RHRP Jermaine Van Buren to the Oakland Athletics for a PTBNL. Rumors that the player is OF Milton Bradley were denied by Nationals GM Jim Bowden.
Tonight: LHP John Lannan (1-0, 0.00) makes his second start for the Clippers tonight at 7:05PM against Indianapolis RHP John Wasdin (1-1, 5.97)
A five-run fifth inning was the downfall of the Senators as Harrisburg dropped a 6-2 decision (box/gamer) to Reading. Facing off against the Phillies top pitching prospect Carlos Carrasco, the Senators could muster only four hits and three walks. Starter Mike Hinckley was ineffective in his four plus innings, allowing four runs six hits and three walks. Hinckley left the game in the fifth after walking the bases loaded and surrendering a two-run single. Reliever Josh Hall could not stop the scoring allowing one inherited runner to score and then two of his own, putting Harrisburg down 6-2. Zech Zinicola pitched the final inning without allowing hit, but walking two. In the month of June, Zinixola has made seven appearances (13 1/3 IP) with a 0.68ERA and 1.13WHIP, the issue with him has been his control as he has walked ten batters and only struck out four in that same timeframe. RF Steve Mortimer was 1/4 with an RBI and 2B Seth Bynum drove in the other run with a sacrifice fly.
Today: The Senators and Phillies face off in a double header (two seven inning games) starting at 5:35PM. In game one, RHP Jerome Williams (0-1, 4.91) faces off with Reading RHP Patrick Overholt (0-2, 6.55). In the second game, RHP Jim Magrane (1-4, 4.50) takes on RHP Chris Rojas (2-1, 6.48)
LF Chris Marrero delivered the clutch two-run double in the bottom of the eighth putting the P-Nats ahead by a run on their way to a 4-2 win (box/gamer) over Frederick. Marrero finished the game 1/3 scoring the final insurance run. CF Mike Daniel was 2/4 with his 4th stolen base in the Carolina League and 3B Matt Rogelstad was 2/4 with a run scored. Shairon Martis made the start for Potomac, turning in a solid six innings allowing four hits and one run while striking out six. Josh Perrault picked up the victory in his two innings of relief and Adam Carr walked the tightrope for his thir save of the season. Carr pitched the ninth, walking two batters with one-out before setting the next two hitters down on strikes. Notes: Brian Hunsicker of the Potomac News has a good piece on P-Nats 1B Brett McMillan. McMillan’s father Doug was a Nationals’ regional scout (Pacific Northwest) who passed away earlier this season. Doug McMillan was responsible for signing guys like Kory Casto and Stephen Englund.
Tonight: The P-Nats hit the road for a series in Myrtle Beach. LHP Justin Jones (2-3, 4.11) takes on LHP Jonathan Venters (0-3, 3.23) at 7:05PM
The Hagerstown Suns still have not won a game in the second half, losing 9-2 (box) to Lake County. Starting pitcher Jhonny Nunez fell to 1-6 after allowing four runs on six hits and four walks in five innings of work (he did strike out six). Relievers Yader Peralta and Joseph Welsh were equally ineffective surrendering five runs on six hits on only two combined innings of work. 3B Leonard Davis was 3/4 with his 10th home run on the season in the losing cause. This month, Davis has batted 313/370/522 in 19 games (67AB) with two home runs and nine RBI.
The Suns are off today before starting a three-game home series with Lake County on Thursday
The Lake Monsters lost their first home game of the season blowing a lead late, lsoing 4-2 (box/gamer) to Oneonta. Reliever Buzz Vargas took the loss allowing three runs on four hits and two walks in 1 2/3 innings. This spoiled another solid start by Glenn Gibson. Gibson pitched six innings allowing six hits and striking out five. He allowed only a sixth inning home run. CF Mark Gildea was 1/3 with an RBI and two stolen bases. 1B Bill Rhinehart was 1/3 with a walk and a run scored, and DH Garrett Bass was 2/4 with an RBI double.
Tonight: RHP Colton Willems (1-0, 3.60) matches up against Oneonta RHP Mark Brackman (0-0, 0.00) at 7:05PM in Vermont
The GCL Nationals blew an early lead, surrendering four runs in the bottom of the ninth en route to a 6-4 loss (box) to the GCL Mets. Garrett Mock made an injury rehab start pitching the first two innings allowing no runs and no hits while striking out one. 2007 7th and 10th rounders Patrick McCoy and PJ Dean followed up with their professional debuts. McCoy allowed three hits over two innings and Dean went two innings surrendering one unearned run on one hit. Neither McCoy nor Dean walked or struck out a hitter. Justin Phillabaum (2007 29th round) took the loss giving up all four runs on three hits. The GCL Nationals were not helped on defense where 3B Angel De Castro made four fielding errors, including three in the fifth inning alone. SS Stephen King homered in his third consecutive game, a three-run shot in the third.
The GCL Nationals do not play today. They have a home game against the GCL Marlins scheduled for 12PM tomorrow

Are Abreu’s seven strikeouts in two innings a “first” in washington minor league history?
Any idea how long Maxwell will be out of the Harrisburg lineup?
Good to see Marerro (and Daniel) doing well in High A!

Abreu - Could very well be. I cannot recall anything like that in the two plus years I’ve been doing this
Maxwell - He is still in Potomac. After the strained abs from sneezing, the Senators got Sheldon Fulse from Hagerstown. Not sure when Maxwell is due back.

when will Josh Whitesell get called up to Columbus? He’s been hitting the ball well in H’burg and has taken a good number of walks as well (I believe he leads the Eastern League in OBP and is second in OPS).
I like Larry Broadway but it’s obvious he just isn’t the same player as he was the past couple of seasons. Plus, it seems that Steve Mortimer can handle the 1B duties in Harrisburg. What am I missing here?

Moving Whitesell from AA to AAA isn’t necessarily a promotion for him. At this point, Whitesell is facing more talented pitchers in Harrisburg. In Columbus he may face guys who have played in the majors but often times on the downhill side of their cup of coffee. It will be interesting to see if the Nationals give Whitesell a shot if Young/Belliard/Fick are traded.

Hey Brian,
Thanks for the word on Englund yesterday. With Blackwood hitting below .100 Id love to see him getting those ABs. Its great to see the Vermont pitchers continue to do well.
Did Martis start last night? The box said it was Carlos Martinez, not sure.
Finally, have you seen any word on signing Dave Duncan, lhp from GT, or is that a lost cause? He seems like a top end prospect that obviously will take well above slot money. Thanks Brian, keep up the amazing work

My gut tells me Duncan is headed back to Georgia Tech and hopefully (for him) a Day One selection in 2008. Of the the 22 remaining unsigned players, I’d wager that Duncan (23rd rd), Pitts (30th rd), and Kasparek (34th rd) are the most likely to return to college; and, Floyd (35th rd), Erb (38th rd), Cisterna (46th rd), and Walters (47th rd) would be my guesses at not signing from the JuCo class. That leaves 15 players the Nationals could sign.

Is Jacob Smolinski hurt? He was off to a great start for the GCL Nats, but has not played since the weekend. Any idea when he may return?
Brian Oliver | 27-Jun-07 at 11:41 am | Permalink
I’ll see what I can uncover. Perhaps Brian James has some insight, he had the details on Englund and Corporan
Marcus | 27-Jun-07 at 12:21 pm | Permalink
E. Gonzalez hasn’t been in the box score for the GCL Nats the last two days either wondering if you know whats up with that…Thanks
Brian James | 27-Jun-07 at 2:10 pm | Permalink
He had some tightness in his hammy and has been held out for precautionary reasons. I’d expect to see Smolinski back in the lineup tomorrow. More likely that his return will come at the expense of Yhonson Lopez than Christopher Blackwood. Englund’s eventual return along with the debut of Steven Souza (probably tomorrow) should set the outfield straight. Derek Norris should also debut in the near future at catcher.
FYI - Michael Watkins isn’t on the roster, MLB.com has simply not taken him off the roster on its web site.
Johan Figuereo is being converted into a pitcher. Robert Tolan wears #5 and Clint Pridmore wears #17

BJ - Thank you very much for insights and updates. They are much appreciated.
Chris | 27-Jun-07 at 3:09 pm | Permalink
So are you saying Blackwood, Englund and Souza will be the starting OF?
Brian Oliver | 27-Jun-07 at 3:25 pm | Permalink
Smolinski is likely to return to LF if I’m reading this correctly. He’ll play in the OF with Blackwood and Souza until Englund returns at which point I would imagine the Nationals will rotate the four guys between the three positions with the DH spot used to keep a bat in the lineup when necessary.
Chris | 27-Jun-07 at 3:33 pm | Permalink
Oh ok, thanks Brian. Didnt Smolinski start at 3B earlier in the year? I like the idea of Englund and Souza together in the OF, both sound like great athletes. Great to see Stephen King keep up the hot start too
Brian Oliver | 27-Jun-07 at 3:50 pm | Permalink
The Nationals said they planned on converting Smolinski to an OF after they signed him. His bat was what got him drafted but they needed to find a position besides SS for him to play.
I may be wrong on Souza, he could possibly be a 3B
Chris | 27-Jun-07 at 4:06 pm | Permalink
Ok, thanks Brian. This is my first year really following low level minor league baseball and Ive been suprised how “instructional” it is, for lack of a better word. Its almost like a training camp I guess. Thanks again for all your great work.
Brian James | 27-Jun-07 at 4:56 pm | Permalink
The GCL is like boot camp for baseball players. The games are at noon and they drive up to 3 hours packed into vans with 12 other people to get to road games. All the Nats players are required to wear “high” socks. No facial hair is allowed. It is known to sometimes get a litlle warm during the summer months in Florida. English is a second language. Viera is not an exciting city to live in, the players don’t have cars.
The “A team” lineup for the GCL would be
LF = Smolinski
CF = Englund
RF = Souza
1B = Pridmore
2B = King
SS = Gonzalez
3B = ??? Not De Castro he’s done virtually nothing for two years
C = Norris
A DC Wonk | 29-Jun-07 at 1:03 pm | Permalink
Naive question: why make it like a bootcamp? Why noon games in the south? (Why no facial hair?) . . . why not instill, rightaway, a positive connection between the team and the player?
Brian Oliver | 29-Jun-07 at 1:06 pm | Permalink
Strictly a guess on my part but I would imagine the uncertainty of rain later in the day makes playing earlier a better gamble when it comes to getting games played.
As for the facial hair thing, dunno. To each organization their own, I guess.
