Are Abreu's seven strikeouts in two innings a "first" in washington minor league history?
Any idea how long Maxwell will be out of the Harrisburg lineup?
Good to see Marerro (and Daniel) doing well in High A!

Abreu - Could very well be. I cannot recall anything like that in the two plus years I've been doing this

Maxwell - He is still in Potomac. After the strained abs from sneezing, the Senators got Sheldon Fulse from Hagerstown. Not sure when Maxwell is due back.

when will Josh Whitesell get called up to Columbus? He's been hitting the ball well in H'burg and has taken a good number of walks as well (I believe he leads the Eastern League in OBP and is second in OPS).

I like Larry Broadway but it's obvious he just isn't the same player as he was the past couple of seasons. Plus, it seems that Steve Mortimer can handle the 1B duties in Harrisburg. What am I missing here?

Moving Whitesell from AA to AAA isn't necessarily a promotion for him. At this point, Whitesell is facing more talented pitchers in Harrisburg. In Columbus he may face guys who have played in the majors but often times on the downhill side of their cup of coffee. It will be interesting to see if the Nationals give Whitesell a shot if Young/Belliard/Fick are traded.

Hey Brian,

Thanks for the word on Englund yesterday. With Blackwood hitting below .100 Id love to see him getting those ABs. Its great to see the Vermont pitchers continue to do well.

Did Martis start last night? The box said it was Carlos Martinez, not sure.

Finally, have you seen any word on signing Dave Duncan, lhp from GT, or is that a lost cause? He seems like a top end prospect that obviously will take well above slot money. Thanks Brian, keep up the amazing work

My gut tells me Duncan is headed back to Georgia Tech and hopefully (for him) a Day One selection in 2008. Of the the 22 remaining unsigned players, I'd wager that Duncan (23rd rd), Pitts (30th rd), and Kasparek (34th rd) are the most likely to return to college; and, Floyd (35th rd), Erb (38th rd), Cisterna (46th rd), and Walters (47th rd) would be my guesses at not signing from the JuCo class. That leaves 15 players the Nationals could sign.

Is Jacob Smolinski hurt? He was off to a great start for the GCL Nats, but has not played since the weekend. Any idea when he may return?

He had some tightness in his hammy and has been held out for precautionary reasons. I'd expect to see Smolinski back in the lineup tomorrow. More likely that his return will come at the expense of Yhonson Lopez than Christopher Blackwood. Englund's eventual return along with the debut of Steven Souza (probably tomorrow) should set the outfield straight. Derek Norris should also debut in the near future at catcher.

FYI - Michael Watkins isn't on the roster, MLB.com has simply not taken him off the roster on its web site.

Johan Figuereo is being converted into a pitcher. Robert Tolan wears #5 and Clint Pridmore wears #17

Smolinski is likely to return to LF if I'm reading this correctly. He'll play in the OF with Blackwood and Souza until Englund returns at which point I would imagine the Nationals will rotate the four guys between the three positions with the DH spot used to keep a bat in the lineup when necessary.

Oh ok, thanks Brian. Didnt Smolinski start at 3B earlier in the year? I like the idea of Englund and Souza together in the OF, both sound like great athletes. Great to see Stephen King keep up the hot start too

The Nationals said they planned on converting Smolinski to an OF after they signed him. His bat was what got him drafted but they needed to find a position besides SS for him to play.

I may be wrong on Souza, he could possibly be a 3B

Ok, thanks Brian. This is my first year really following low level minor league baseball and Ive been suprised how "instructional" it is, for lack of a better word. Its almost like a training camp I guess. Thanks again for all your great work.

The GCL is like boot camp for baseball players. The games are at noon and they drive up to 3 hours packed into vans with 12 other people to get to road games. All the Nats players are required to wear "high" socks. No facial hair is allowed. It is known to sometimes get a litlle warm during the summer months in Florida. English is a second language. Viera is not an exciting city to live in, the players don't have cars.

The "A team" lineup for the GCL would be

LF = Smolinski
CF = Englund
RF = Souza
1B = Pridmore
2B = King
SS = Gonzalez
3B = ??? Not De Castro he's done virtually nothing for two years
C = Norris

Naive question: why make it like a bootcamp? Why noon games in the south? (Why no facial hair?) . . . why not instill, rightaway, a positive connection between the team and the player?

Strictly a guess on my part but I would imagine the uncertainty of rain later in the day makes playing earlier a better gamble when it comes to getting games played.

As for the facial hair thing, dunno. To each organization their own, I guess.
