Across the Affiliates 07/05/07

Brandon Claussen made his first start for Columbus as he continues his rehabilitation from 2006 shoulder surgery, struggling through 4 2/3 innings of a 5-4 Columbus loss to Toledo (box/gamer). Claussen allowed four runs on eight hits, walking no one while striking out three. Claussen allowed baserunners in every inning he pitched, but was helped out by double plays in the second and third. All that being said, the Clippers rallied to tie the game at four in the top of the eighth on a two-run Kory Casto triple (Casto finished the game 2/4 with three RBI). But reliever Chris Booker ended up with the loss as he struggled with his control walking four over the final 1 1/3 innings.

Tonight: Columbus RHP Joel Hanrahan (3-2, 2.70) at Charlotte LHP Heath Phillips (5-7, 5.56), 7:15PM

The Harrisburg Senators lost their fifth game in a row, dropping a 9-6 decision to the Connecticut Defenders (box/gamer). The Senators used a patchwork pitching staff with five pitchers taking the mound, none making it three innings. Beltran Perez made the start allowing four runs in 2 2/3 innings, though three of those runs were unearned as the result of an error by 1B Josh Whitesell. Josh Hall and Zech Zinicola also had rough nights allowing five runs on seven hits in their combined four innings of work. Whitesell made up for the error with a two-run home run and CF Frank Diaz was 2/5 with a solo home run. CA Luke Montz was 3/4 in the loss. Notes: OF Alex Escobar is scheduled to join the Senators on injury rehab this weekend.

Tonight: LHP Mike O’Connor (1-1, 3.28) versus Connecticut RHP Nick Pereria (3-8, 4.00) at 6:35PM

The Potomac Nationals needed little more than home runs by CA Brian Peacock and 1B Brett McMillan along with six strong innings of work from Cory VanAllen to defeat the Myrtle Beach Pelicans 3-2 (box/gamer). VanAllen allowing only one run on five hits and three walks in his six innings of work while striking out five. It was his strongest start since his promotion to the Carolina League. Josh Perrault and Eddy Baeza pitched the final three innings with Perrault allowing the only run. Peacock was 3/4, hitting a second inning solo home run and McMillan was 2/4 with the eventual game-winner, a two-run shot in the sixth. The P-Nats started Chris Marrero, Justin Maxwell, and Mike Daniel in the outfield with mixed results. Maxwell was 0/4 with a strikeout; Daniel was 1/3 with a double, walk, and two strikeouts; and, Marrero was 1/4 with a run scored and three strikeouts.

Tonight: LHP Jack Spradlin (2-5, 4.83) versus Myrtle Beach RHP Deunte Heath (NR) 7:35PM

The Suns lost the first game of their home series with the Delmarva Shorebirds, 4-2, leaving thirteen runners on base (box). Don Levinski started and allowed three runs on nine hits in five innings while striking out seven. DH Leonard Davis was 2/4 with a double and a run scored.

Tonight: RHP Erik Arnesen (3-3, 4.23) versus Delmarva RHP Jeffrey Moore (5-3, 2.08)

The Lake Monsters game at Tri-City was suspended by rain in the bottom of the third inning. The game will be resumed today at 5:00PM with the teams completing the nine-inning game followed afterwards by the regularly scheduled second game, abbreviated to seven innings. Jordan Zimmermann made his first professional start retiring the first seven batters in a row (four strikeouts) before surrendering back-to-back-singles prior to the game’s suspension. The Lake Monsters scored in the first innning without benefit of a hit. Boomer Whiting led off the game with a walk, stole second and went to third on a groundout. After a walk to Garrett Bass, Whiting scored when the catcher threw the ball into center field trying to catch Bass stealing.

Today: The Vermont pitcher in the resumed game is still to be determined. RHP Edulin Abreu (2-1, 4:35) is scheduled to start game two. Both Tri-City pitchers are TBA.

The GCL Nationals lost to the GCL Dodgers 5-1 (box). 2007 15th round pick Patrick Arnold made the start going the first two innings allowing one run on two hits while striking out two. 13th rounder Steve Shepard made his professional debut striking out two and walking two in one inning of work. 7th rounder PJ Dean took the loss allowing two runs on five hits over two innings. George Lombard made a rehab start playing CF going 1/2. Stephen King returned to the lineup at 2B, going 1/3. 2007 2nd, 3rd, and 4th rounders comprised the heart of the order. Jake Smolinski was 0/4 with a strikeout from the #3 hole, DH Derek Norris had a pair of singles from the cleanup spot, and 3B Steven Souza was 0/4 with a strikeout from the #5 spot.

Today: The GCL Nationals complete their rain suspended game from June 30 prior to their regualryl scheduled 12:00PM game with the GCL Cardinals

And thanks to MiLB.com, Dominican Summer League box scores are now easily accessible online. The DSL Nationals1 defeated the DSL Mets 5-4 (box). Amado de los Santos started the game allowing four runs on seven hits and two walks over five innings. Santiago Molina picked up the win with two shutout innings while striking out five. CA Danny Taveras was 2/5 with a double and a pair of RBI.

The DSL Nationals2 swept a doubleheader from the DSL Tigers, winning the first game 9-1 (box) and the second game 8-6 (box). In game one, LHP Miguel Aracena picked up his third win of the season allowing only one run on four hits in 5 2/3 innings of work, striking out eight. RHP Miguel Sabala struck out three batters over the final 1 1/3 innings of relief. 2B Hendry Jimenez was 2/4 with an RBI and two runs scored,  LF Samuel Gomez was 2/2 with a pair of walks, singles, and runs scored. RF Eleazar Cuevas was 3/4 with an RBI and a stolen base. In the second game, LHP Jose Taveras picked up the win in relief despite allowing three runs on four hits in only two innings. 1B Victor Vizcaino was 2/3 with a pair of runs scored. SS Yeurys Tejeda was 1/3 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Today: The DSL Nationals2 visit the DSL Padres at 11:00AM
