Potomac returns to action tonight on the road in Wilmington. LHP Cory VanAllen (1-2, 6.30) matches up with Blue Rocks RHP Julio Pimentel (5-3, 2.58).
Hagerstown opens a series in Delmarva. RHP Erik Arnesen (3-4, 4.98) takes the mound against Shorebirds RHP Jeffrey Moore (6-3, 2.13).

The GCL Nationals finally completed their 6/30 suspened game against the GCL Cardinals scoring two eighth inning runs on their way to a 2-1 victory (box). Atahaulpa Severino pitched the first five shutout innings back in June allowing two hits and three walks while striking out three. PJ Dean picked up his first professional win with two shutout innings allowing one hit and one walk with three strikeouts. 2007 40th round selection Kai Tuomi picked up the save in his first professional appearance allowing one run, one hit, and two walks over two innings of relief. LF Jake Smolinski was 1/3 with a walk and a run scored. CA Derek Norris was 0/2 with a pair of walks scoring the othe run. CF Yhonson Lopez was 3/4 with an RBI. In the regularly scheduled game, DH Derek Norris (2/4) singled in the rehabbing George Lombard (3/3 with a double) in the fifth inning which provided the winning margin in a 5-4 win over the GCL Cardinals (box). RF Michael Burgess (2/4) hit his first professional home run in the third inning. LF Jake Smolinski was 1/3 with a walk and two runs scored. Oddly enough, Atahaulpa Severino was also the starting pitcher for the regularly scheduled game. His second time around was less successful allowing four runs on five hits over four innings of work. Randy Matias picked up the win in relief allowing only two hits and one walk in three innings while striking out three.
The GCL Nationals host the GCL Mets at 11:00AM
The DSL Nationals1 visit the DSL Tigers at 11:00AM.
The DSL Nationals2 defeated the DSL Padres 10-6 (box). 19-year old LHP Jose Taveras had a rough start allowing five runs (though only one was earned) on six hits over 1 2/3 innings. 20-year old RHP Miguel Sabala picked up the win with 4 1/3 shutout innings allowing only two hits while striking out nine. 17-year old switch-hitting 2B Hendry Jimenez was 3/5 with a double, two RBI, and a run scored. 18-year old lefthanded 1B Juan Urdaneta scored twice and drove in one run going 1/2 with two walks. 20-year old switch-hitting SS Francisco Soriano made his second start going 2/4 with a double, RBI, and run scored.
The DSL Nationals2 are off today.

Whoa . . . who are these guys Hendry Jiminez and Francisco Soriano? They are off to awesome starts!

Have there been any more rumblings about John Lannan being promoted to the Nats for the second half?

Wonk - Nothing I can dig up other than Soriano recently joined the team
Kevin - Nothing mentioned in the media as yet. I’ll see what I can find.

Brian: I read somewhere that the Nats weren’t after anyone in the international market this season, but had there eye on a some players for next season. Any idea who they are and how good they may be? I got the idea from what Bowden said that they think there are players they can get this year that could be as good or better than Smoker and McGeary?
Also, I was wondering if it may make more sense to offer McGeary bigger bonus money and let Smoker go? The idea being McGeary + 31B in 2008 > Smoker.
I’m curious to see who else, if anyone the Nats will add to the team this summer. I’m hoping for both Smoker and mcgeary, but I’d at least like one of them and a good international signing.

The McGeary + 31B is an interesting option but I still think Smoker will get signed if for no other reason than Bowden having to answer Soriano = Zimmermann + a likely signability pick in 2008 (since the pick compensation is only a one year deal)

Curious, if the Nats can only afford to sign 1 between Smoker or McGeary, who would you sign?
Also, if the Dmitri Young to Atlanta rumors are true, what type of player(s)would you expect in return?
Thanks-

Regarding Smoker, folks have to realize negotiations are a two-way street. Josh was undoubtedly hoping to go higher, perhaps in the teens (13th to Atlanta) or early 20s, at least. At pick 31, he will be offered $1 million in slot money, give or take a few thousand. He was probably hoping for $1.3-1.5 based on the higher slot he hoped for.
Now he has a tough choice to make, go to Clemson or take the money. Plus, he has to weigh the reality of the possibility of recovering the $300-$500 (or more) if he goes to Clemson. Could he be drafted in three years at, say, Detwiler’s slot? Could he suffer an injury and need ulnar collateral ligament replacement? Tough choices for an 18-year old! Patience is needed all around.

Ryan - It honest to god is a coin flip. Smoker is probably a nose better.
Dick - Exactly. Smoker is in the uneviable position of having to gamble on being no worse than a first rounder in 2010. Anything less than that is losing money.
Dick | 11-Jul-07 at 1:09 pm | Permalink
Brian - And probably the top half of the first round at that! I predict he comes to his senses and takes the million, but if I were him, I would be in no rush to make that decision.

Whats the good word on Detwiler … I haven’t anything since “Detwiler will report to Vierra tomorrow.” Has he pitched yet, is he still conditioning?
Thanks for the update

No official word as yet. I would anticipate his debut some time this weekend.

Thanks. I figured something would have been announced. But it was either in his press conference or his “interview” with Carp and Sutt that he mentioned needing to get in shape since he hadn’t pitched in a few months. Looking forward to your updates.

Sorry, hit the wrong button, Here is the complete post.
I was just checking out Baseball Reference.com’s Expos/Nats pages for previous draft history. Boy, does “The Plan” hinge on this draft being more like the Expos 2000 draft than, say 2001.
In 2000, the ‘Spos nabbed Grady Sizemore (3), Cliff Lee (4), Shawn Hill (6), Wes Littleton (7) and Jason Bay (22). Of course, MLB then fritted away most of these great picks when they (mis)managed the franchise.
On the other hand, in 2001 the only draftee likely to have any impact (and the jury is still out) is Chris Schroder (19). Prospect bust Michael Hinckley’s is the only other 2001 guy still in the organization, near as I can tell.
All of this makes me hold my breath for this 2007 class.

I am not sure I understand. I think you mean Soriano money will instead go to a longer deal for Zimmerman, and the second part perhaps a Boras client? In other words, if Smoker doesn’t sign, they would have to justify being cheap to Soriano that way?
In any case, I agree that Smoker MUST be signed, or Soriano walking is a complete disaster.
