That's too bad. We were hoping for better results from Lannan's first major-league start (his first professional start was in 2005 w/ Vermont).

Lannan was a little wild, but not excessively. The strike zone did appear to be erratic - I had the impression that Schroeder was given nothing for the remainder of the 5th - he did well considering. All in all, Lannan's debut was satisfactory, but I don't see how he can be kept on the roster with the need for more relievers for the double header this weekend.

When i went to the Clippers game, i noted that Lannan didn't have the command yet. maybe a few more starts in the MLB will help him

It's been a wild year for Lannan (Class A+, AA, AAA & ML). He's in the same position as Matt Chico was in the beginning of the year; that is, learning how to pitch while on the job against major leaguers. Actually, he and Chico are similar types: soft-tossing lefties. Lannan still needs more work on throwing inside to lefties, another 2/3 mph on the fastball and more experience. The question is, Where can he best get this training? If they move Balester (who has more FB velocity) up to the Nats togther with Chico & Lannan, they would have 3 "on-the job" pitchers learning they trade. As a season ticket holder, I would be find with those moves coupled with Shawn Hill, Jason Bergmann and Jason Simomtacchi completing the rotattion w/ the odd starter moving the bullpen as the #7 pitcher for long relief/spot starter. The other 6 bullpen pitchers would be Cordero, Rauch, Rivera, Colome, w/Bowie & Bascik/King/Traber as the lefties. Ayala has not yet recovered and is a free agent after this season and Schroder can be optioned to AAA as DL insurance.
