Luis Atilano - now there's a name long forgotten from last year's trade activity. I note that they had him coming out of the bullpen in his action this year - not sure if that's to bring him back slowly from TJS or whether that's where he's going to be longer term. Anyone know what sort of stuff he has? Fastball speed? He was purportedly a very good prospect before his surgery and was a long-term strategic move made for short term pain... now he's back.

from when he was drafted

BBA ... FB at 88-91 and could go to 94 if he gains some weight

TeamOne ... slippery curveball

MLB ... Cutting fastball, effective sinking changeup. Good mound presence

You can add the following names to the list of players invited to instructional leage:
Jake Rogers, Bill Rhinehart, Mark Gildea, Caleb Staudt
If I hear of any others, I will let you know.

This kid Maxwell continues to hit. I understand he might be a September call-up. Wouldn't it be something if he turns out to be another Andre Dawson. He reminds me of Andre with his size, speed, power, etc. Hey I can hope.

Maxwell is batting .266 in Potomac . . . but that includes a .162 July, but .347 with 10HR in August. Perhaps he has found his groove.

Michael Martinez is playing great. He's been hitting really well in the lead off spot. His defense was spectacular last night (he has great range), and he's a good base runner. Granted he's probably a bit old for low A, but I think he should move on to AA or AAA next year.

Other things I noticed: the Suns have improved their defense. I've been bashing them all season long for not playing good defense. But I noticed that all of the infielders were putting themselves in front of the ball and blocking it to account for the crappy hops of Municipal Stadium. The problem has been addressed, so good job Tommy!

Francisco Placencia has a killer arm. He had an assist, and should've had another.

Chris Lugo pitched very well, and only made one mistake (a home run) in his five innings.

Robby Jacobsen has a good glove (always has).

John Popper is hitting better now. His single as the rain fell in the 8th inning tied the game. I'm mad at the umpire for not letting the 8th finish. And, of course, 10 minutes after he called the game, it stopped raining. They could've--and should've--finished that game.

The not so great:

Pat Nichols is in a very bad funk. He's still hitting the ball hard though, but it's just not falling. He was robbed of a single and a double in this game.

Popper has a weak arm. They stole third really easily on him--even with a left handed hitter at the plate.

Yesterday, the Carolina League announced the all-league team, Potomac was the only CL team without a representative. Since, Potomac had a good record on the year, I am guessing that the fact many of the Potomac players did not spend a full season in the CL (Maxwell, Brown, Marrero) probably explains the omission.

Was browsing the DSL site, found 2 photos, which from your 24 July DSL all-star game post, I surmise to be 19 yr old Eduardo Urbina (the MVP) of the DSL Nats 1. Nice to see what one of the names we've been reading of, look like!
