The Dominican Winter League held their draft yesterday and there were eight Nationals prospects among the players selected in the 20 round draft …
| Round | Player | POS | Team | 2007 Team |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6 | Núñez, Jhonny | RHP | Licey | Hagerstown |
| 7 | Cabral, Marcos | 2B | Aguilas | Hagerstown |
| 8 | Novoa, Yunior | LHP | Escogido | Hagerstown |
| 11 | Martínez, Michael | SS | Estrellas | Hagerstown |
| 15 | Germán, Agustín | C | Licey | Vermont |
| 19 | Abreu, Edulín | RHP | Licey | Hagerstown |
| 19 | De la Cruz, Jorge | OF | Gigantes | Vermont+ |
| 20 | Alvarez, Jean | SS | Escogido | Vermont |
‘+’ De la Cruz was released by the Nationals this season per his request
Núñez, Cabral, and Novoa will likely be starters (Núñez & Novoa in the rotation) for their respective teams this winter. While the others will likely fill bullpen or bench roles. The season begins in mid-October.

Can someone explain what this Dominican Winter League draft is?

The Dominican Winter League is one of many off-season leagues (from MLB’s perspective). Latin American players from the DR, Venezuela, Mexico, and even non-Latin American players participate in a league that typically lasts from the middle of October through the first of the year. Most of the Dominican “name” players (think Miguel Tejada) were at one point “drafted” by a team for the winter league. They then will play for that team every year they decide to participate.
What happened yesterday is that Dominican players who had previously not participated were drafted to their winter team.

The rosters for the Hawaiian Winter League came out, but no Nats??!!
I guess we’re not participating, doing the instructional league instead?

VH - I got word from Bobby Williams a few weeks ago that the Nats were not participating for the reason you referenced.

Its a pity the Puerto Rican winter league folded, though they’ve been having problems for years. Will be tough on the Caribbean World Series with 1 team having an off day every day with only 3 teams, unless they include Panama/Nicaragua/Colombia as a joint team.
