With last night’s loss to the Phillies, the Nationals “clinched” a protected first round selection in the 2008 draft. According to the MLB Collective Bargaining Agreement, the first fifteen selections of the first round are protected from being used as compensation for signing Type A free agents. The Nationals fell to 68-85 on the season with the 7-6 defeat and in doing so can finish in no “worse” than a tie for 14th with the Toronto Blue Jays. As of this morning, the Nationals have the #9 selection in the 2008 draft and can still finish with any pick from #1 to the #15.

Do the Nats have any one that’s potential type-A free agents this winter?

WHoops, Oh, wait, I just figured it out. If the Nats sign any type-A’s, they won’t lose the pick. OK. Never mind . . .

It’s funny, really, that we all assumed that Stan Kasten and co. were attempting to nail down the #1 pick this year. Tampa has nailed down high draft picks every year, never having finished above last place. It’s funny, though, how in spite of all the predictions that they will contend in a few years, they continue to finish last.
I like our chances picking as low as 9th, as long as we keep Mike Rizzo.

Greetings,
I’m a writer for The Jaunt and I’ll be attending the Nationals game this Sunday against the Phillies for the last game at RFK Stadium. It will be my first time at RFK and seeing the Nationals in person.
I will be in section 310, row 17. If you or any of your visitors will be attending the game I’d love to hear from you. I’m gathering information and getting fan comments for an article I’ll be writing about RFK Stadium. My email address is ericmcclung@thejaunt.com

I guess if you are going to sign a big type A FA this is the year, at least we’d only have to give up a 2nd round pick. Now if any of the FA out there is signable for a reasonable amount (of money AND years) we shall see.
I hope we don’t tie ourselves down to a long term contract for an aging CFer when we have hot outfield prospects likely to be ready in the next few years. (Maxwell in ‘08?, Daniels in ‘09, Marrero is ‘10 and Burgess in ‘11), all of which would likely either make it or wash out before a likely contract for a Jones, Hunter, Dunn or Rowand expires.

The ‘Race to the Bottom’ artfully defined. Thanks for the work. The trend line says the Nationals pick sixth again, maybe seventh, but no Pedro Alvarez unless he has Boras as an agent.

Any ideas on some draft prospects yet?
I know it is really really early, but the early the more looks people can get at them.
Good wokr Brian

Forget Alvarez, good player but he’s another 3B the Nats would have to re-position like Casto and Marrero. The pick is Justin “The Natural” Smoak, the power “switch hitting’ !! 1B from Univ. of South Carolina who has the potential to be another Mark Teixeira AND its rumored that Scott Boras will be his “advisor” which will scare off some teams ahead of the Nationals. The Nationals have all the young pitchers they need, so the first pick in 2008 will be a POWER HITTER!
The 2008 draft is medicore; therefore, losing their 2nd Round pick to sign a Type A Free Agent may not be a great lost. Bowden would probably like to sign Adam Dunn BUT Kasten doesn’t want to spend the money ( I believe Dunn is a Boras client). Dunn would give them Zimmerman, Dunn, Wily Mo, Kearns & Church BUT Dunn would have to play 1B (which means that Johnson may be traded-Yankees) and Church would have to play CF. If Kasten nixes all Type A free agent signings, the fall back option could be to check out the health of Rocco Baldelli (CF-age 26) of Tampa Bay. Tampa has a big decision to make concerning his options after 2008. If they don’t exercise them before the start of the 2008 season, Baldelli would be a free agent after 2008.
Also, the Nationals need to resolve the middle infield problem. Guzman and Lopez are free agents after 2008. Guzman has been injured most of the time with the Nats and Lopez’s performance has been disappointing. Decisions have to be made about these two players and the SS/2B positions. Other than Belliard, they have no one in the system ready to fill in. AND, who hits in leadoff spot if Lopez, Guzman and Logan are gone?

Expect Nats to draft more pitching in early rounds next year.
(I came up with this insite with my eyes closed!)

If that kid Smoak is really what you say he is, I don’t think he will be around for the Nats to get him. Unless they bumb up alot of posistions.
I don’t think Dunn will be a free agent this offseason because the Reds own a team option.
Another util player this offseason is former Nat, Brad Wilkerson. Bring him back. he is fan favorite, at least with me.

I think he’s a good pick because Nats need a good power hitting 1B prospect. Some of the teams ahead of them in the draft (Tampa, White Sox,Astros, Marlins, Pirates) don’t have a primary need for a 1B and Tampa, Marlins & Pirates can’t afford him. Plus, Kansas City doesn’t have the $$$ to sign a Boras client and Baltimore just spent a fortune on Wieters who was a Boras client and may not want to do it again. So he MAY be there around #9. Any way, he’s someone to keep an eye on next college season.
Cincinnati’s 2008 team option with Dunn is $13 mil with escalators (??) that could bring it to $16 mil (Soriano terrority!) PLUS a 19-team no trade clause. OR, Cincinnati can pay a $500,000 buyout and take the draft choice
(either 1st/2nd round depending who signs him) and begin the rebuilding process. Remember, this is the group that traded Kearns, Lopez & Wagner FOR Bray, Majewski, Daryl Thompson, Brendan Harris & Royce Clayton. If you were the GM, which would choose to do with Dunn?

I’m not sure about the reds drafting record, but if was anything like the Nats this year, I say take the picks. Otherwise, trade him for prospects that are more mLB ready, since the Reds alreadly have Jay Bruce and Homer Bailey
