Baseball America has their weekly transactions update. Two moves involved the Nationals. Both OF Mike Restovich and 2B Bernie Castro were granted free agency. Restovich joined the Nationals as a free agent this past off-season. Restovich had a brief cup of coffee with the Nats early in the season hitting 143/172/179 in 28AB. After being sent down to Columbus, Restovich finished the season hot ending the year hitting 270/332/503 with 20 home runs and 58 RBI over 356 AB. Castro completed his second season in the Washington organization hitting 280/335/362 with 34 stolen bases over a full season (118 games) in Columbus.

… and do we think a 2B-man wwho hits 280 with 34 SB is useful to have?

He is a AAAA player. Good enough for AAA but not for the majors.

Any idea when other AAA cuts will be made? The name Larry Broadway comes to mind…

An 20 HR, 58 RBIs in 356 ABs would be helpful to this miserable team as well.
28 ABs was all the look he got. Too bad.

Restovich is another guy who is probably more a tweener like Castro. With guys moving up from each level (Vermont to Hagerstown, Hagerstown to Potomac, etc) there will need to be spots opened up. Guys like Restovich and Castro are not long term pieces and are normally easily replaceable from minor league free agency

Restovich has been up and down from AAA to the Majors for the better part of 6 seasons now. His totals in the majors:
152 G, 268 AB, .239 AVG, .313 OBP, .377 SLG, 6 HR, 21 RBI, 68 SO
If he couldn’t hit in Minnesota …

Now that the Nats are cleaning house in Columbus, I’m curious to see what type of players they will pick up who may help as emergency players in 2008. They need hitters and AAA players like the following would be great additions: Val Pascucci (OF/1B,Marlins AAA), Scott Seabol (3B,Marlins AAA), Brooks Conrad (switch hitting INF,Astros AAA), Bobby Scales (INF, Boston AAA), Andy Cannizaro (INF, Yankees AAA), Doug Bernier (INF,Rockies AAA) plus power hitting Craig Brazwell (1B) of Royals if the decide not to protect him.

AAA is always the most fluid team in a team’s minor league system. Columbus will always be loaded with new faces every year. Especially with a GM like Bowden.
The roster you want to look at closely next year is Harrisburg. Also the manager at Harrisburg will be interesting. Does Potomac Mgr get promoted with his players again?
