I thought Larry Broadway was eligible for minor league free agency. I feel sorry for the guy if the Rule 5 draft is the only way he can leave the organization. I grant that he had his chance to make the team, but I think that 2006 was his real lost opportunity. He was injured just before Nick Johnson was injured to miss more than a year. He would at least have had his cup of coffee, and he could have impressed enough to improve his chances of sticking in 2007.

Of course, since we got Dmitri, it worked out better for the team. It just worked out pretty poorly for Larry Broadway.

I'd be pretty surprised if the Nats lose someone in the MLB portion of the Rule 5 draft, but agree that relievers are the most likely suspects. I expect that they will lose several in the minor league portions; Broadway probably will be left unprotected in the AAA phase, as the Nats seem to have moved on.

Maybe O'Connor and Traber could be outrighted to clear additional space for selections. There are some interesting options out there.

The main problem with the Nats outperforming expectations is that they will pick #10 in the Rule 5 draft. I don't know if the quality of players available by #10 would make it worthwhile for the Nats to attempt any more than one player.

Davis does strike out a bunch. But he's a pretty good hitter, has descent power, and plays 2nd and 3rd well, and could probably play short in a pinch. He has a great arm, and given practice could be a good right fielder too.

I could see a team that has no offense taking a flyer on him. With major league hitting instruction for an entire season on the bench, he might be able to cut down on his strike outs. If he does that, he projects into a solid back-up, or an every day rover with good power.

If he leaves the organization in rule 5, I will be happy for him. He's a good guy. And he deserves a chance.
