It’s exciting to think that we can promote kids from the GCL and Vermont, and yet still probably have good teams there. Might Hagerstown and Harrisburg be decent this year?

I think it’s safe to say that Harrisburg will be better, now that it’s getting prospects vs. suspects from Potomac this year.

Hagerstown will be my team to watch. With Alaniz, Beno, Zimmermann and Burgess on track to progress to A- this spring, they should handily outpace last year’s edition.

Not that Harrisburg shouldn’t improve, partially because they couldn’t do much worse, but also because of the contributions I hope to see from Baez, Desmond and Lowrance. (Also that tall skinny kid, Det something, we picked up last year.)

WUL - Depends on how steady the Nats want to keep the prospect flow, maybe. For example, I could see them moving Alaniz along after just a half season in Hagerstown. Not that he’s a slow developer, but I’d think that as both a late (age-23) draftee and an effective swingman, he’s someone whose potential they’d probably be wanting to fast-track to the big club (as indeed they’re doing in the ADP; I expect to see him high in Brian’s rankings).

It wouldn’t stun me to see Zimmermann in Woodbridge before the end of the Carolina League season, either.

By contrast, Beno and Burgess, being younger, could perhaps wait a while.

And in fact Brian spoke back in September: “Expect Alaniz to start 2008 in Potomac with Zimmermann.”

In an interview with Charlie Steiner and Buck Martinez yesterday (XM 175)at the Scouts banquet in L.A., Bowden said that Baseball America now rates the Nats farm system 9th among all teams, up from 30th last year, the biggest increase ever (per Bowden).

Not bad!

I was very impressed when I saw Seuss play a couple times last year. That said, they have to push him as he was old, lets see what he can do in A+
