On Michael Burgess, would he be an adequate OF if he keeps his weight under control? Or would he be a likely defensive liability in the OF no matter what? It was disappointing to read he may be destined for 1B, where Marrero hangs out.

Ed - From what I know about Burgess, I don't believe his weight is necessarily an issue. He appears to be on the right course to stick in the outfield.

NF - I didn't ask about Souza but I think he falls into the same camp as King/Englund. High upside but high risk. It will be interesting to see how he develops in 2008.

Breakout pitcher: Hassan Pena. But, This year’s Lannan: Jeff Mandel.

How does this compute? Can you explain the difference?

Tom - I believe he sees Pena as the guy most likely to develop from potential into prospect while Mandel would be the guy who would just do what needed to be done to progress from level to level. The bottom line being, Pena turns into a pitching prospect of note while Mandel makes a major league debut in 2008 but his ceiling remains relatively stable.

Any interview is only as good as the questions asked. Those were great questions - very well done. Brian, you were able to bore in on the details that are important on our top prospects and didn’t waste anyone’s time. Excellent! I particularly enjoyed the snipets on Burgess and Zimmerman… I hadn’t yet envisioned Burgess at 1B given that he throws 95mph or whatever it is - hard to waste an arm like that.

Well, at least I can take solace in knowing our farm system isn’t the atrocity it was back in ‘05.
Glad I took time to read this. Love to see the Nats put SOMETHING in Richmond for next year; AA or AAA sounds about right.
