Thanks Brian
any word on why Meyers is in extended?

Yader Peralta did pretty good for H-town last year (3.19, 48 ip, 29 h, 22 bb, 54 k and he’s 22 yr old.
His release surprises me a bit, his K/IP is over 1.0. Though he was shelled at Potomac (6.52, 9.7 ip , 8 h, 4 bb, 14 Ks)

Brian –
what about jeremy plexico? he was the only lefty in the H’burg’s bullpen the past couple of years. haven’t seen him on any of the lists so far.
also, what’s your over/under date on when the organization re-signs Dan Foli again? how many times have they released him then re-signed him?

Plexico was released

For the uneducated - what does “extended” imply?
Chris | 01-Apr-08 at 1:25 pm | Permalink
Mjames- Extended spring training down in Viera. They will probably play for Vermont or in the GCL

I believe Foli was already resigned for this year. I’ll check into that.

Realize that Justin Jones is injured, but I did not seem him on the unassigned list. I thought that he remained property of the Nats. Is that correct?

J Jones is out all year.

I put Jones on the DL in Harrisburg as a placeholder

Another way to look at the definition of “extended” is that the player didn’t demonstrate enough experience or skill during spring training to make it onto a roster.
One thing I’m trying to figure out is the Nationals love for free agents that are clearly done. I mean… Bret Boone? Surely that spot could be better used.

It isn’t always that the extended kids aren’t as skilled. Sometimes a kid is real good, but the team just doesn’t have a spot available. Also, the players who got lots of money to sign get lots of opportunities to prove themselves. Let’s face it, if the team invested 500k signing a kid, the club wants to get every opportunity to get a return on the 500k. Therefore, kids that did not get a bonus have to beat out the bonus boy on an unlevel playing field.
It isn’t always that the extended kids aren’t as skilled. How many great players didn’t make it because they sat behind somebody like Ryan Zimmerman. Being a newbie third baseman in this organization might be pretty much a “dead end” for a few years.

I thought Justin Jones was released in 2007.

He was, but was then resigned to a deal more beneficial to the Nats (placing less pressure on Jones and the organization).

What does the asterik next to the name mean?
