The Potomac Nationals added RHRP Clint Everts to their roster today, replacing RHRP Craig Stammen who was promoted to Columbus yesterday.
Everts returns to Potomac. He spent the 2006 and 2007 season as a starter in Potomac before being transitioned to the bullpen late in the season. Everts, a former first-round pick by the Montreal Expos in the 2002 First-Year Player Draft, was 0-2 with the Suns this season posting a 4.63 ERA in eight appearances, totaling 11 2/3 innings.
RHSP Hassan Pena was activated from the DL (tired arm) in Hagerstown, taking Everts’ spot on the roster.

Who is going to be promoted when Chad Cordero goes on the disabled list? Will it be a pitcher, or is it time to bring back Elijah Dukes?

Manny likes to have 12 pitchers (5 starters and 7 relievers). If Cordero goes on the DL, Manny would like to have another reliever (Schroder). If Dukes is activated, an outfielder has to be waived/traded (Harris/Mackovack)to make room for him. The bigger problem is when LoDuca is activated. Nieves has played well, is a better defensive catcher who is capable of throwing out a runner and has become the personal catcher for John Lannan who is the best pitcher in the rotation. But LoDuca has $5M contract and Estrada has $1.25M contract. What do they do???

I’d agree that Schroder is the likely replacement for Cordero. Dukes bumps Mackowiak, Harris has played more often when the choice came in. As for Lo Duca, my preference would be to dump Estrada and hold onto Nieves who has performed well and is the better defensive option among the three.

I agree with all three of your moves…However, since Estrada’s elbow is listed as only 80% healthy, Nats may DL him just in case Nieves doesn’t work out.

Brian-
Barry Svrgula says Van Allen has been promoted to Harrisburg. He didn’t mention another move, but I wonder If Meyers is ready for Potomac.

Glad to see Van Allen get a call up to Harrisburg. He’s a good pitcher. I hope Arnesen will get called up to Potomac soon. He’s done a good job in Hagerstown.

Is Craig Stammen that good that he jumps from High A ball to AAA ball?
Brian Oliver | 01-May-08 at 8:09 am | Permalink
Jane - He’s going as a RHRP. I don’t necessarily believe it’s completely merit-based as much as it is moving a guy to fill a need. He seems the guy most likely to be moved when Muñoz or Booker comes off of the DL.
Not sure what impact this would have but Stammen was born in Coldwater, OH; went to college in Dayton, OH; and, is now playing in Columbus, OH

Brian - I realize that Craig Stammen is a RHRP, but, shouldn’t his “skills” be tried at AA first? It seems to me like politics in baseball, again!!!

Not really, Jane. There is a common misperception that AAA is where the best prospects are. In reality, that description fits AA. Stammen will likely only pitch in blowouts, which is fine because he’s shown a tendency of getting smacked around the 2nd time through the lineup.
