The 2008 Futures Game roster was announced today and the Nationals have one representative. RHP Shairon Martis who has pitched for the Harrisburg Senators and now the Columbus Clippers was selected as a member of the World team.
The 21-year old native of Curacao is a combined 4-4 with a 4.18ERA in 15 minor league starts (14 in Harrisburg; 1 in Columbus). He has 65 strikeouts and 29 walks in 79 2/3IP.

what’s the criteria to be named to the futures game? I’m curious as to why Luke Montz wasn’t picked for the US Team, but Lou Marson (AA-Reading) and Taylor Teagarden (AAA-Oklahoma) were. Montz has better power numbers than Marson and Teagarden’s stats flat out stink.

The only requirement I am aware of is similar to the MLB all star game - every MLB team has to have at least one representative. The U.S. team this year also consists of players considered for the Olympic team, so there are a couple guys on the U.S. roster that probably wouldn’t have made the team in years past. Some MLB teams would be hesitant to allow their top tier prospects to play in the Olympics for fear of injury. Therefore those prospects may have been overlooked to play in the Futures Game.
