Wow, what a miserable week in the minors for the Nats.

P-Nats Web site recap of last night’s game states Kown is starting in place of Detwiler tonight.
I also noted that Elijah “Ironman” Dukes is back on the DL. He must be watching the “Fitness the Mike Hampton Way” videotape series.

for all of you who want Adam Carr in Washington please take him. He just blew another save on the Island. Why was Jordan pulled after 4 innings, our staff ace and he cant go more than 4,whats up with that.

I think it would be safe to say that as the minor league seasons come to an end organizations are closely monitoring innings. Zimmermann is probably getting close to his innings limit at this point.

I would tend to agree with Andrew. It would not surprise me to see this be the case with more of the pitchers as the season winds down. It might explain Detwiler getting bumped. It could happen to Willems, Alaniz, Estrada, and Martis.

then why bother to have them pitch at all. I thought the goal of the minors was to get players ready for the majors, and major league pitchers sure pitch more than 4 innings.

I would be curoius to know what studies have been done to determine the impact of the number of innings and games pitched during a season on a pitcher’s future. I know that Baseball Prospectus has analyzed in detail the adverse impact when a pitcher throws more than 120 pitches or more in a game, but I am unaware of studies establishing an adverse impact if a pitcher throws 200 innings versus 150 innings in a season or pitches March through September versus March through Mid-August.
Generally, I would think to get better pitchers need to pitch, just like hitter need to hit, but perhaps that is too simplistic.

pahou — I think the answer is that some of these guys are pretty young, and you want to ramp them up slowly.

Brian,
Any possibilty that J Zimm got pulled early because he will be called up to the big club. The Nats will need another starter due to the double header and no off days for awhile.

settle down pahou. isnt pitching 4 innigns better development than not pitching at all?
pahou | 08-Aug-08 at 1:08 pm | Permalink
no its not especially when your bullpen sucks and your paying to watch it happen

I guess a lot of what this is is I am not a Washington Nationals fan I could care less what happens to them. I am a Harrisburg Senators fan and as far as I am concerned the major league team has messed with my team to the point that they are almost not worth watching any more. I know that the Senators exist to make the major league team better, but the Nats needs a major front office change in the worst way. It also shows you how far away the minors are from helping the major league team when they sign other teams AA rejects. I am getting frustrated.

Eric - I hope he isn’t going to get called up. There is no reason to call him up this season. None. Let him finish a full season of professional baseball in the minor leagues. Invite him to the major league camp at spring training and look at him as a mid-season call-up in 2009 like Collin Balester was this year.
I know that’s not going to be popular among many of the commenters but I don’t feel any need to rush these guys to the majors any sooner than they need to be.

Pahou, remember this is his first full pro season. I think it is safe to assume this is the most he has ever pitched in a year. Next year let him throw 200. Still no proof that babying these guys prevents injuries but they shouldn’t make him compile too many innings just for a AA pennant race.
