Detwiller seems to be finishing strong; very encouraging.

Detwiler’s ERA over his last 8 starts is 3.32

Scratch that. His ERA is actually 3.27
MiLBfan | 19-Aug-08 at 8:22 am | Permalink
He has had 5 walks and 23 strikeouts over the past four games.

Yes. Good to see him finishing strong, but if you really want to see some cool stats check out the last 10 games line at milb.com for Yunior Novoa of the Harrisburgh Senators.

Actually as Chico noted, if we had signed Crow and not signed Rameriz we would have been in top ten, but really we need to be in top five every year.

Nats Journal gives nice credit to NFA.
NJ gives the difference between Nats and Crow at only $500,000. That is within the rounding error for most MLB budgets.
Maybe it comes down to the agent for Crow thinking the Nats wouldn’t be stupid enough to pass on their #1 pick over just a half-million? Hendricks simply misread the Nats, and let his player down.

I’m putting Crow behind me.
I’ve got a question for everyone reading this, who do you think the top ten prospects will be at the end of the year…
Marcus | 19-Aug-08 at 10:27 am | Permalink
That last post was a mistake but heres my top 10:
1. J. Zimmermann
2. M. Burgess
3. C. Marrero
4. R. Detwiler
5. S. Martis
6. J. McGeary
7. J. Smoker
8. S. Gonzalez
9. D. Espinosa
10. S. King
expo_ram | 19-Aug-08 at 10:49 am | Permalink
Espinosa at #9 huh? I like your top 8, but I think Desmond (still young) and Norris might round out my top 10.
My final thought on Crow: now the Nats have the very real threat of NOT giving an agent just anything they want. They will have this in their back pocket from now on…should help long-term

Should be interesting to see who comes from DSL1 to our US affiliates next year - a couple of pitchers and Perez at the least…

J Cole - Wow. Nice catch on Yunior Novoa. Folks - the last 10 games, in relief at Harrisburg he has a 0.00 ERA in 19 IP w/ 22K’s. His K’s have increased big time over the last 5 games. Possible spot duty with the Nats in Sept? Why not?
Brian - what happened to Eury Perez in DSL1? He was scortching the league with his base stealing and average, and now I see he hasn’t played since 8/11, when he didn’t bat and was picked off. My guess is that he injured himself on that play, or his recent slump has kept him out of the lineup. You got anything?
Brian Oliver | 19-Aug-08 at 12:02 pm | Permalink
Mark - Information from the DSL is a challenge to get. I’ll make the inquiry but if it’s an injury, we’ll likely never know.

I’m kind of worried about Perez and Elvin Cuello who hasn’t played in awhile. I read in an article that there have been sixteen Dominican players suspended for verious background violations.
Berndaddy | 19-Aug-08 at 12:54 pm | Permalink
Oh poo, I forgot Willems…
Brian should we expect your top ten in September after the season and is that when Baseball Amer., etc etc do there list and breakdowns..
When I say expect, I do mean that I appreciate the information. Brian you’re just to good at what you do. Look even Chico at the Post is using your site for info.
You really should have a pay pals donation thingy on your front page to offset your hard work. Ipay for my 2 cents…
Brian Oliver | 19-Aug-08 at 1:00 pm | Permalink
Berndaddy - I’ll likely have a top 10, 20 or some random number list up after the minor league season wraps up. I typically try to do a Year in Review for each level with highlights/lowlights and then flow into the top prospect lists.
As for PayPal … nah. Then it becomes a job ;)

A job with dozens of bosses, who are inclined to complain about the least thing and say “Well, you know, I PAID for this!” =)
And nice to see Detwiler finishing well.

Did I hear Charlie and Dave say Mike O’Connor was badly injured in batting practice? I thought I heard broken nose.
Tom | 19-Aug-08 at 9:46 pm | Permalink
Yes, freak accident. Mike was hit by a line drive yesterday while he was throwing his bullpen prior to the game. The ball broke his nose, cheek bone and cracked his right orbital bone. He is done for the season and will be in DC Friday for surgery. He is doing as well as he can considering everything.

At this point, I dont think anyone can argue that Zimmerman and Burgess are the top 2.
After that, I guess mine is a bit different.
Smiley Gonzalez
–The kid is tearing it up in the GCL. There is no reason for him to not be at at least Vermont. He got off to a hot start, and has kept it up. He’s the equivalent of a high school senior in his first season in pro ball, and he’s hitting for average, but most importantly has walked more than he has K’d. He did that last year too. He is an excellent command of the strike zone and is hitting for a high average.
Ross Detwiler
–Most of the year has been bad, but the talent is still there and it’s his first real year in the organization.
Jack McGeary
–This kid comes in right after going to school and has struck out more than 1 per inning, and has almost a 5/1 SO/BB ratio. He’s been hit a little, but still looking for for his limited experience and considering he’s in school for 3/4 of the year.
Shairon Martis
Destin Hood
–I realize that he hasn’t had much success to date, but it’s his first taste of pro ball. He’s probably a longer term guy than most, but he’s still got big time ability. Focusing on baseball full time now should help him a lot. Instructional league once the season is over could do wonders for him.
Adrian Nieto
–I still don’t know exactly why he fell, but the kid can hit. He should have been a first rounder and think he’s going to make us all very happy.
Derek Norris
–All of a sudden the organization looks very nice at the C position. His eye at the place is amazing, and he’s shown some power at the plate.
The team has the talent, it’s just a matter of being patient.
