Justin has let me know that the Nats put up a six spot in the first inning of their game with the GCL Twins and lead 6-0 after one.
UPDATE: MiLB, for once, is updating the GCL box score as it goes.
I’ll turn it over to Justin for updates.
Thanks!

Not necessarily on the ground, just checking milb website every few minutes. Still 6-0 after two. As Brian noted earlier, Patrick Arnold was sent dowm from Vermont to pitch this game. 0 ER 1 H 0 BB 2 SO after 2 IP. Looking good so far. Nats got Twins’ starter out after 2/3 inning. He had 3 ERA for the year with alot of wins for a GCL pitcher. Ramirez had a bases loaded single to get 2 RBI’s, that was the biggest play of the game so far. Hood scored a run on the first go round, but grounded out with 2 outs and the bases loaded to end the misery (Twins’) Smiley had a RBI walk and a single in the same inning.

Yeah, maybe they’re finally giving the NAts some respect now that they’re in the playoffs. Throughout the year thaey have been the worst updated GCL squad. 6-2 after 2 1/2. Twins got a single, doubl, single in that order, all with 2 outs to pull within 4.
Chris | 28-Aug-08 at 1:33 pm | Permalink
Twins actually had a better record tho they took the wildcard

Arnold struck out the side in the 5th. Nats got a single, Stolen Base, and RBI single to take a 7-2 lead after 5.

Ok here is where it gets dicey. Arnold left after 5.2 IP finishing with 2 ER & 6 SO. Solid starting effort. I say dicey because NAts relievers have sucked in the lower levels, especially Hagerstown and GCL. Nats still up 7-2 after 5 and 1/2. Offense has been largely shut down by a 22 yr. old Venezuelan for the last 4 innings, but he shouldn’t be able to go another inning, so hopefully Nats can get some insurance runs off the next pitcher.

Is this a single elimination game?
If the Nats advance to the championship, is the final single elimination or best 2 of 3?
Brian Oliver | 28-Aug-08 at 2:24 pm | Permalink
Pilchard - Yes, this game with the GCL Twins is single elimination. The finals are best out of three.

Can we send Hanrahan down to close this one out?

Damn you J. Cole ;)
7-5 entering the bottom of the eighth

8-5 … CA Sandy Leon doubled and scored from what I can determine
J. Cole | 28-Aug-08 at 2:54 pm | Permalink
Sorry, as stated earlier though.
One more inning to go. If they can finish ‘em off, looks like a GCL Championship of Nats vs. Phillies. Home field should belong to Nats on the strenght of a better winning pct.

Smiley drove in Leon with a double. Runners 2nd (Smiley)/3rd (Curran) one out for the heart of the order (Hood, Labrie, Ramirez, & Higley)
Brian Oliver | 28-Aug-08 at 2:57 pm | Permalink
Looks like Hood delivered with a two-run double. 10-5 to the 9th
J. Cole | 28-Aug-08 at 2:59 pm | Permalink
Yes, except Leon scored on fielder’s choice off a Curran bunt to first maybe. It says fielded by first baseman, so suicide squeeze maybe and Leon came home from 3rd (bunted over by Newsome on previous play).
Yes, heart of the order. Ramirez big RBI man!
Chris | 28-Aug-08 at 3:01 pm | Permalink
Doesnt have to be a bunt, could have just been a ground ball and he tried to get Leon at home
Big double from Hood blows it open
J. Cole | 28-Aug-08 at 3:01 pm | Permalink
YES! YES! Hood with the BIG 2 bagger. 10-5. Can the ‘pen hold a 5 run lead for 1 inning?
Bob L. Head | 28-Aug-08 at 3:01 pm | Permalink
For some reason I’m expecting better things from “Destin” than I am from “Tanco.”
J. Cole | 28-Aug-08 at 3:06 pm | Permalink
Bob = Funny. Down to the last out. “Gil” on the mound. Can he tread water?
J. Cole | 28-Aug-08 at 3:06 pm | Permalink
Gil does it. Over. Nats 10-5.
Chris | 28-Aug-08 at 3:08 pm | Permalink
How do you see that already?

Recap has it

Got it now, nevermind. Well done boys

This was fun, I know that the most important thing is to develop the players and winning in the minors isn’t a big deal. However, i think it is good for these youngsters to deal with pressure situations and they are all coming up together so they can form strong bonds winning championships together in the minors and hopefully a culture of winning carries over to the big club. Hagerstown should have a solid team next year as well, so maybe these guys will do it again next year. Best from Vermont + Best from GCL = good H-Town team next year. Strong starting three for the championship series.
J. Cole | 28-Aug-08 at 3:13 pm | Permalink
Chris - I’ve become sort of a pro with following the minors games. Box score always updates first before recap. Look at how many IP the teams pitchers have thrown and you can see where you are in the game. You can also follow how many at-bats the hitters have, factoring walks, Errors and HBP and you can figure out who is coming up next as well.

Finally, Nationals playoff baseball! Well, kinda. How much better is it to be Destin Hood today than it is to be Aaron Crow?

That’s funny to me, bro…
Too funny…

J. Cole - I’d imagine (though I’ll confirm) that McGeary might hang around through the weekend even if classes began this week

Alright, thanks for the heads up JCole

I’m from California. Schools start later, colleges usually begin in mid-September. But I went to state school and we were on a quarter system, so I just wanted to throw that out there, but off the top of my head - I would say classes don’t start for another 2-3 weeks.

Ronny | 28-Aug-08 at 3:33 pm | Permalink
Bob- Good things happens to good people, and Crow is not a good person he’s a greedy S.O.B and he doesn’t deserve to be in our system. We want talented class acts like Hood and Ramirez not guys who think they are better than the next man.

A little wild to start the game, Smoker had a walk and a hit batter, but a Double Play ended the inning quickly. No score after top of the first.
