Smoker gets through the top of the first with just a walk and HBP
J. Cole | 29-Aug-08 at 12:15 pm | Permalink
A little wild to start the game, Smoker had a walk and a hit batter, but a Double Play ended the inning quickly. No score after top of the first.
J. Cole | 29-Aug-08 at 12:16 pm | Permalink
Brian - you probably type much faster than me.
J. Cole | 29-Aug-08 at 12:17 pm | Permalink
Wonder why Nieto is getting to play. He’s been good with the bat. I think he had some bad defense behind the plate and they would rather play Ramirez at DH.
J. Cole | 29-Aug-08 at 12:17 pm | Permalink
Make that Nieto is NOT getting to play.
John | 29-Aug-08 at 12:18 pm | Permalink
J.Cole: I think he had a couple of errors in his last game. Both Killian and Leon have reps as being good defenders. I wonder if they’re thinking they need the D at catcher more since the rest of the lineup is pretty stacked.
Brian Oliver | 29-Aug-08 at 12:19 pm | Permalink
Nieto played one game at catcher. Guessing it’s a matter of familiarity with the pitchers.
Nieto could DH but that would bump Higley or Ramirez from the lineup.
John | 29-Aug-08 at 12:22 pm | Permalink
Nieto also has had elbow problems, but he did catch for the Florida Legends this summer, so I don’t think he’s hurt.
I think it’s his defense or familiarity with pitchers as Brian said.
Brian Oliver | 29-Aug-08 at 12:24 pm | Permalink
Left them loaded … damn
John | 29-Aug-08 at 12:26 pm | Permalink
Smiley doesn’t score from second on Labrie’s single. It said a liner in the recap, I guess he was being cautious about being doubled up.
J. Cole | 29-Aug-08 at 12:26 pm | Permalink
UGH - Gonzalez Single, Hood Walk, Labrie Single to load the bases, but Ramirez and Higley can’t make it happen.
John | 29-Aug-08 at 12:32 pm | Permalink
It always makes me nervous when they take awhile to update an inning.
John | 29-Aug-08 at 12:40 pm | Permalink
Why do I have a feeling Smoker’s getting bombed right now.
J. Cole | 29-Aug-08 at 12:42 pm | Permalink
John - Funny. Smoker has been pitching good. I would think that you are wrong on that.
Brian Oliver | 29-Aug-08 at 12:45 pm | Permalink
I see a hit and walk so far
Brian Oliver | 29-Aug-08 at 12:46 pm | Permalink
and a wild pitch
Brian Oliver | 29-Aug-08 at 12:46 pm | Permalink
and an unearned run
Brian Oliver | 29-Aug-08 at 12:47 pm | Permalink
two errors by Lombardozzi
Brian Oliver | 29-Aug-08 at 12:50 pm | Permalink
with two outs … single-wild pitch-walk
then fielding error & throwing error on same play allowing the run to score
J. Cole | 29-Aug-08 at 12:52 pm | Permalink
That’s GCL for you.
John | 29-Aug-08 at 12:52 pm | Permalink
J. Cole: I was reffering to the fact that it took them awhile to update the top of the second. In my experience that means a long inning, with lots of scoring.
Thankfully only one run.

Off topic from Rosenthal
Something has to give with the Nationals, whose first season in their new park is an embarrassment.
Bowden could be fired on merit, or if he is charged for his possible role in a financial scandal involving the signings of players from the Dominican Republic. The FBI reportedly is investigating Bowden and his special assistant, Jose Rijo.
Another possibility: Bowden could be replaced by assistant GM Mike Rizzo and pushed into a secondary role. A third option: Bowden could remain GM, leading to the departure of team president Stan Kasten.
Bowden has survived this long due to his close relationship with Mark Lerner, one of the Nationals’ principal owners and the son of owner Ted Lerner. Kasten, who inherited Bowden almost certainly would prefer his own man.

Nats battle back for two runs … so far
John | 29-Aug-08 at 12:53 pm | Permalink
Hood just doubled in two runs.
Brian Oliver | 29-Aug-08 at 12:53 pm | Permalink
Smiley with two run double puts Nats up 2-1 after two
John | 29-Aug-08 at 12:54 pm | Permalink
Sorry. Smiley with the double.
John | 29-Aug-08 at 12:56 pm | Permalink
Looks like hood hit into a DP with runners on second and third.
Nats with the lead, but seemingly have blown two big opportunities so far.
Brian Oliver | 29-Aug-08 at 12:56 pm | Permalink
Smoker pulled for Kelley in the 2nd
John | 29-Aug-08 at 12:57 pm | Permalink
Interesting. It says Kelley replaced Smoker to get the last out in the second. I hope it’s pitch count and not an injury.
Brian Oliver | 29-Aug-08 at 12:57 pm | Permalink
Looks like it was your typical 2B-CA-3B double play
base running mistakes
::sigh::
John | 29-Aug-08 at 1:00 pm | Permalink
First two reach in the top of the third.
Brian Oliver | 29-Aug-08 at 1:00 pm | Permalink
Kelley gets through the third unscathed
John | 29-Aug-08 at 1:01 pm | Permalink
Kelley retires the Phillies in the top of the third.
John | 29-Aug-08 at 1:02 pm | Permalink
Nats need to take advantage and have a big inning if they get another chance.
J. Cole | 29-Aug-08 at 1:06 pm | Permalink
Hood popped out in foul territory, looks like a speedy Curran tried to tag up and got thrown out at home. That’s my take. Why not let a solid hitting Labrie try to get the hit, though? Kelley gets through the 3rd unscathed. Hope Smoker isn’t hurt. They couldn’t have pulled him for being ineffective, not his fault Lombardozzi had the errors.
John | 29-Aug-08 at 1:11 pm | Permalink
Nats get an unearned run in the third. Labrie gets on, steals second and somehow gets driven in. 3-1 after three.
Brian Oliver | 29-Aug-08 at 1:11 pm | Permalink
unearned run in the third for the Nats
Brian Oliver | 29-Aug-08 at 1:14 pm | Permalink
Labrie reached on error (to 2B)
stole 3rd and came home on throwing error
J. Cole | 29-Aug-08 at 1:18 pm | Permalink
Couple of errors and good base running by Labrie = 1 more run. 3-1 Nats. I think this will be a high scoring game.
Brian Oliver | 29-Aug-08 at 1:22 pm | Permalink
Kelley gives up two hits and a walk in the 4th but no runs
John | 29-Aug-08 at 1:22 pm | Permalink
3-1 after 3 1/2. Looks like Kelley struggled a little, but got through.
John | 29-Aug-08 at 1:24 pm | Permalink
Two hits and a walk. They caught a runner stealing which helped.
Nats go down in order in the fourth.
Brian Oliver | 29-Aug-08 at 1:24 pm | Permalink
Nats go quietly in bottom of 4th
J. Cole | 29-Aug-08 at 1:24 pm | Permalink
Look like Killian, Newsome, Curran went 1-2-3 in the 4th.
JMUNats | 29-Aug-08 at 1:25 pm | Permalink
Any particular reason Smoker was pulled after 1.2 innings? He seemed to run into a bit of trouble, but nothing to warrant getting yanked.
Brian Oliver | 29-Aug-08 at 1:26 pm | Permalink
Pitch count is my guess. Nationals have an organizational rule about the maximum # of pitches anyone can throw in an inning
Brian Oliver | 29-Aug-08 at 1:28 pm | Permalink
Looks like Kelley had a quiet 5th
J. Cole | 29-Aug-08 at 1:29 pm | Permalink
Maybe they can go to Hicks for relief, he looked good and only pitched 2 innings a few days ago.
Brian Oliver | 29-Aug-08 at 1:31 pm | Permalink
re: Hicks … I’d imagine that would more likely be an option for tomorrow
Brian Oliver | 29-Aug-08 at 1:38 pm | Permalink
10 minutes since the last update = good news?
Brian Oliver | 29-Aug-08 at 1:40 pm | Permalink
nope
J. Cole | 29-Aug-08 at 1:41 pm | Permalink
Guess not. Lokks like Smiley, Hood, Labrie went down 1-2-3.
Brian Oliver | 29-Aug-08 at 1:44 pm | Permalink
Kelley again good in the 6th
J. Cole | 29-Aug-08 at 1:44 pm | Permalink

J. Cole | 29-Aug-08 at 1:55 pm | Permalink
I bunch a sucks, that’s who.
J. Cole | 29-Aug-08 at 1:56 pm | Permalink
Definitely not content with a 3 run lead to win the game.
Berndaddy | 29-Aug-08 at 1:59 pm | Permalink
Makes you wish we could have seen more of him this year, that’s J-RAM, that is…
Brian Oliver | 29-Aug-08 at 2:00 pm | Permalink
One more solid inning for Kelley
J. Cole | 29-Aug-08 at 2:02 pm | Permalink
Kelley! Kelley! He is 23 though, he should be killing against the 18 yr. olds.
John | 29-Aug-08 at 2:03 pm | Permalink
Top of the order. I’d love to see a huge inning here.
J. Cole | 29-Aug-08 at 2:04 pm | Permalink

John | 29-Aug-08 at 2:06 pm | Permalink
LOL. I was thinking how can someone flyout to third? I get it now.
dd | 29-Aug-08 at 2:07 pm | Permalink

Brian Oliver | 29-Aug-08 at 2:07 pm | Permalink

1-2-3 Blackwood in for Hood in the top of the 8th.

Brian Oliver | 29-Aug-08 at 2:27 pm | Permalink
Game over … Nats win
J. Cole | 29-Aug-08 at 2:30 pm | Permalink
Gil puts them down in order! Nats Win! Nats Win! One more to go with McGeary on the rubber tomorrow and Hicks available for relief. Kelley was clutch here. Smiley, Ramirez, and Labrie on offense.

Berndaddy - note hope for next year, but maybe for about 3-4 years down the line, when these kids start hitting the majors. Won’t be sitting at a desk tomorrow, so I won’t be on the update thread inning by inning. See you guys tomorrow afternnon.

J.Cole - I’m talking about next year in the minors. Next year in the big league, well, there’s a next year for the big club !!!
Here’s my wish list for next year !!!
1) Jim Bowden is fired !!!
2) Jim Bowden is re-hired and fired again!!!
3) Add a power bat into the line up. (RF or 1B)
4) Add a top line pitcher
5) The Lerners spend the money and we get quality picks at both #1 and #9a
6) Eckstein gets the job as hitting coach
7) We get a nice arm for the bullpen
8) We re-hire Jim Bowden and then fire him yet again, laughing, tar—- oh well you get the point.
9) We re-sign Cordero and he produces by the end of the year.
10) Zim, Dukes and La-Mills hit massive amounts of home runs and we end up 82 / 82 for the year.
I wake up from my dream now..
