Reading the print version of the Post this morning, there is a note that the Nationals outrighted RHPs Brian Sanches and Chris Schroder to Columbus. This removes them from the 40-man roster immediately. With this move, the Nationals have 38 players on their 40-man roster leading up to September roster expansion. The Nationals can also transfer OF Wily Mo Pena and RHP Shawn Hill from the 15-day to the 60-day DL. That frees up four spots for the Nationals.
UPDATES: A couple of additional notes … 1B Dmitri Young is listed on the restricted list which means he does not count as part of the 40-man roster. Additionally, I noticed that RHP Chad Cordero is still listed on the 15-day DL on the Nationals 40-man page. I am pretty sure I saw a note that he was moved to the 60-day DL a few months ago. If Cordero is on 60-day along with Young’s placement on the restricted list, the Nationals are at 37 on their 40-man roster. I also neglected to mention that the Nationals can free up two more 40-man roster spots if they choose to make moves on LHPs Matt Chico & Mike O’Connor and OF Justin Maxwell, both are on the DL in the minor leagues and out for the season.
The Nationals have the ability to open up eight spots on their 40-man for September roster additions, though I doubt they will make all five DL moves.

I thought Schroder would be a contributor for the Nats this year. He’s a guy who has struck out 85 in 78 MLB innings. It just didn’t work out for him.
My guesses for call-ups: Casto, Bernadina, Wagner, Hinckley, Montz. Maybe Speigner.

How about McGeary for a callup? Put him in for an inning here and there in a blowout game. No pressure, just give him a little taste of the big leagues.

A Google search turned up various links here and there indicating that Cordero went from the 15-day to the 60-day DL on July 9. Haven’t yet found anything official on mlb.com or from the DC media.

Hendo - I have the same stuff. ESPN listed him on the 60-day but had no corresponding transaction on his player page.

Steve, I like the idea but we can’t waste another 40-man spot on a minor league pitcher who isn’t ready, since Detwiler is already on it.

If any pitcher is going to get a taste of the bigs, or cup of coffee if you prefer, it will be Jordan Zimmermann…I doubt that happens though, they seem to feel he’s hit his innings limit…otherwise they likely would have sent him back to Potomac for the playoffs. My bet is he’s shut down after the last day of the AA season and will get an invite to the MLB camp, but likely start ‘09 back at AA or maybe AAA depending on how things shake out over the next 6 months…

Latest On Hosmer, Alvarez
By Tim Dierkes [August 29 at 5:49pm CST]
5:49pm: Disappointing development for the Royals - Hosmer cannot play until the grievance is resolved. The hearing takes place September 10th, so he won’t miss too much time.
9:08am: Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette provides his analysis of the Pedro Alvarez situation. How much of this is due to the rivalry between Pirates team president Frank Coonelly and agent Scott Boras? Is Alvarez making a mistake by letting this drag on? Peter Gammons blames Bud Selig, Don Fehr, and Boras for this mess.
Kovacevic does not believe Alvarez will be eligible to return to college in the fall. Independent ball would be the most likely path, if his contract with the Pirates does not stand. Meanwhile, the Royals are trying to keep Eric Hosmer out of the crossfire.

If Hosmer can’t play till after September 10th isn’t his season over?

His season would be over, but there would still be the fall instructional league
