McGeary was added from the GCL. I thought he would be back at school. Do you know if he is delaying his return?

Classes don’t begin until September 22 at Stanford.

I get two kudos points for having called the McGeary call up, he only got about 44 innings in this year (not counting extended spring training of course) and won’t be able to participate in the fall instructional camp in Viera so this is a no-brainer…

But will McGeary start or just get a junk inning or two of relief?
Is McGeary developing faster playing for pro ball part time than he would be if he was playing at Stanford? It’s certainly better for the Nats because the control him, but it’s an interesting question (and something to look for when future HS draftees want to get paid AND get an education) if pitching GCL/VT part time for two years has him better prepared than a season of College Ball…

MNF - I like your way of thinking. Yes the Nats have control of him and yes, he may get more work in on a college team, but would he get the type of coaching he has in the pros? Doesn’t he benefit playing pros kids vs college kids?
Time will tell and not to speak for Brian but I thought he’d said before that he thought Jack might do this for one more year and just start playing full time in two more years. Maybe they ‘ve got a on-line school at Stanford, if not he can go to UMBC on-line.. It’s no Stanford, though.

McGeary has 60 innings in pro ball this year. Assuming that he would be one of the 3 starters at Stanford (which is kind of a big assumption as Stanford is very good, and even stud freshman pitchers do not always make the weekend rotation), McGeary would throw about 65 innings (Stanford’s #3 pitcher threw 67 innings in 2008). In addition, McGeary would also throw in an elite summer league (like the Cape League) for another 40 to 50 innings. Also, college baseball programs play fall ball during which time McGeary would pitch a few intersquad games (most college teams play a 5 or 7 game series during the fall).
So, had McGeary gone to college, he would have pitched a more innings, would have received varied instruction from Stanford’s coaching staff and his Summer league coaching staff over a longer period of time (Ferbuary thru the Fall). For the Nats, you would think/hope that McGeary would receive better and more uniform instruction while pitching fewer innings over a shorter period of time (June thru mid-September).
Hard to say which will be better for McGeary in the long run as this is a very unique situation.

Brian — Why is Vermont using an infielder to pitch in a close game when they have 14 pitchers on their roster? Or is Tejada being converted?

Guessing it was a matter of not having arms available … either injuries, usage or not there yet.

I take it that milb.com is not providing in-game updates on the DSL playoffs. Drat.
