Columbus dropped a 7-5 home decision to Louisville (box/gamer). 23-year old RHP Tyler Clippard allowed only one hit over 6IP with seven strikeouts. Clippard is now 0-2 in August but has a 2.86 ERA and 1.18 WHIP over four starts in August (22IP) with 22 strikeouts and 10 walks. 29-year old RHP Jim Ed Warden took the loss surrendering five runs on seven hits and one walk in just one inning of work.  24-year old 2B Leonard Davis was 3/3, missing the cycle by a single. Davis had three RBI and scored twice. 29-year old 3B/SS Ed Rogers was 1/4 with a double & RBI.

Marco Estrada to be Called Up

Watching the Nats game on MASN where the following was announced. RHP Marco Estrada will be called up from Columbus this week to assume the spot in the bullpen vacated by Luis Ayala.

Estrada is a combined 9-6 between Double-A Harrisburg and Triple-A Columbus with a 3.09ERA and 1.35WHIP with 119 strikeouts and 53 walks over 139 2/3IP.

Columbus lost their sixth straight game but managed to not be shutout for the first time in four games, dropping a 4-2 decision to Louisville (box/gamer). LHP Mike O’Connor allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits over 6IP with five strikeouts. RHP Levale Speigner threw three scoreless innings of relief, allowing one hit while striking out four. 3B Greg Porter was 2/4; LF Frank Diaz was 1/4 with a run scored; and SS Ed Rogers was 0/2 with one RBI.

RHP Ryan Wagner allowed a seventh inning three-run home run as Columbus was blanked 3-0 by Louisville (box/gamer). RHP Craig Stammen threw six scoreless innings in his start allowing six hits and one walk while striking out five. Wagner allowed all three runs on two hits and one walk over just 2/3 of an IP. RF Jorge Padilla was 2/4 and CA Luke Montz was 1/4 with a double.

Potomac scored twice in the ninth on a bases loaded hit-by-pitch and walk to defeat Myrtle Beach 4-3 (box/gamer). Pulling right from the gamer:

Entering the final frame, Potomac trailed 3-2 but caught a major break when Stephen King reached second base on a costly throwing error by shortstop Randy Gress. Andrew Lefave pinch hit for Trevor Lawhorn and drew a walk to put runners on first and second, and the two proceeded to pull off a double steal. But even with the tying run on third base, the situation quickly turned bad. Aaron Seuss struck out and Jhonatan Solano hit a sharp ground ball to Eric Campbell at third who threw out King at the plate for the second out. Francisco Plasencia then pinch hit for Boomer Whiting and singled to left field, but Lefave was held at third. With the bases loaded, Pelicans’ pitcher Cory Gearrin committed a crucial mistake when he hit Michael Martinez to bring in the tying run. With the bags still filled with Nationals, Dan Lyons drew a walk that allowed the go-ahead run to score.

RHP Jeff Mandel started for the P-Nats, allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits and two walks over 6IP with four strikeouts. LHP Jack Spradlin picked up his 5th win of the season with two scoreless innings of relief, giving up two hits and one walk while striking out one. RHP Martin Beno picked up the save with a 1-2-3 ninth. Solano was 1/4 with three runs scored; Lawhorn was 1/3 with a double; and Martinez & Lyons both had two RBI

Jacobsen was forced to take the mound in the 13th, allowing a single, hitting a batter, allowing a sacrifice bunt and suicide squeeze to get charged with the loss. The Vermont Lake Monsters and Staten Island Yankees had their New York-Penn League series opener on Friday night postponed due to rain at Richmond Country Ballpark. The Lake Monsters and Yankees will make the game up as part of a day-night “doubleheader” on Saturday. Friday night’s postponed game will be made up beginning at 2:00 pm on Saturday, while the regularly-scheduled game will begin at the original starting time of 7:00 pm. Both games will be seven innings in length.

Columbus managed only four hits in getting shutout by Indianapolis 1-0 (box/gamer). 25-year old RHP Marco Estrada held the Indians to one run on eight hits over 6IP with three strikeouts. 24-year old 2B Leonard Davis was 2/3 with a double and 29-year old RF Jorge Padilla was 1/4.

Columbus’ bullpen faltered late, blowing a solid outing by 27-year old LHP Mike O’Connor in a 4-3, 10-inning loss in Louisville (box/gamer). O’Connor allowed only one run on four hits and four walks over 5IP with three strikeouts. 27-year old RHP Levale Speigner pitched two scoreless innings of relief, striking out two. 27-year old 3B Greg Porter was 4/5 with a double, home run & two RBI; 24-year old CF Roger Bernadina was 2/5 with a run & stolen base; and 29-year old RF Jorge Padilla was 2/4. Potomac got another solid start from 23-year old RHP Luis Atilano and newcomers Stephen King and Michael Burgess chipped in on offense as the P-Nats defeated Fredrick 6-1 (box/gamer). Atilano went five innings, allowing only one run on five hits and one walk while striking out five. As he recovers from Tommy John surgery, Atilano is limited to five innings of work. And, since July 11, that is exactly what he has given the P-Nats. Over seven starts (35IP), he is 5-1 with a 1.54 ERA and 0.83 WHIP with 23 strikeouts. 24-year old RHP Clint Everts struck out six over three innings of shutout relief. And 21-year old RHP Martin Beno struck out the side in the ninth. The 19-year old Burgess homered in his P-Nats debut and the 20-year old King had an RBI double. 25-year old LF Boomer Whiting was 2/2 with a walk and hit-by-pitch, scoring twice. 25-year old 1B Darryl Lawhorn was 2/4 with a pair of doubles.

Potomac took advantage of five Winston-Salem errors in a 7-5 win on Sunday (box/gamer). 23-year old RHP Jeff Mandel picked up his fifth win of the season, giving up three runs (two earned) on seven hits over 6IP with three strikeouts. 24-year old RHP Josh Wilkie picked up his fourth save allowing two hits and one walk over 1 1/3IP with one strikeout. 24-year old CF Francisco Plasencia was 3/5 with a double, two runs & two RBI. 24-year old 1B Andrew Lefave was 1/4 with a double and two RBI. 25-year old RF Dee Brown was 2/4 with a run, RBI & stolen base. Notes: Hat tip to commenter Carol, who has the news that Hagerstown 3B Stephen King will be promoted to Potomac. The 20-year old King is hitting 284/336/406 in 87 games for the Suns. No official word on the promotion, who he will replace in Potomac, or who will replace him in Hagerstown.

A rehabbing Aaron Boone was 2/3 with a double. He is reportedly headed to Columbus today to continue his rehab. 19-year old DH Jake Smolinski was 1/4 in his last game for the GCL prior to his promotion to Vermont. 18-year old SS Smiley Gonzalez was 1/4 and 18-year old LF Destin Hood was 0/4. 20-year old Chris Curran was 1/4 and is now hitting 329/418/405 in 41 GCL games with eight extra-base hits, 12/15 stolen bases and 22BB to 25K. 21-year old 3B Ronnie Labrie was 1/4 and is now hitting 344/425/469 in 28 GCL games with a home run, sixteen RBI, and 6/7 stolen bases.
